Unlike Blake (Sup Blake ;) ) i don't have just one sauce in my head. Usually, i have some staple ingredients that i keep around for BBQ sauce.
Ketchup (or tomato paste/sauce), onion powder (or fresh onion), garlic, mustard, brown sugar (or molassas), various fruit juices (i love OJ in some barbecue), liquid smoke (for the times you don't have access to a pit), soy sauce, teriake, crushed chiles.
the big thing is just to experiment with it and write down your results if you find something you really like.

Jason:
I'm with you on the fruit juices. Personally I use pinapple or orange. If it is pinapple (and it usually is) I like to use the crushed pinapple and let the sauce simmer for awhile and get out those great hidden juices.
Thanks
Bill
