Lets get a discussion about great bbq restaurants or places that serve great bbq across this great nation of ours. See which state gets the most posts. Lets give the name of the restaurant and city so we all have an idea if we are traveling where to go. Tell us what is really good.

A few good ones that I have tried.

Houston-Hickory Barn BBQ owned by Joel Kiddy. Southwest Houston. Best bbq restaurant on this side of town that I know of. Everything is good.

Yorktown-Paps Leon BBQ owned by Leon Strahan. This guy knows his BBQ. He used to cook with me at the Houston BBQ Cook-off and his real pit, mesquite smoked BBQ is excellent. His brisket and spareribs are fantastic. He loves to talk BBQ so drop in.

Lockhart-Cruz's (pronounced Krites) is a Texas tradition. There are actually two restaurants as there was some kind of split in the family. This is the newest restaurant and this one is new but the family has been cooking for over 100 years.

Lockhart-Smitty's this is the old location of Cruz's. You got to see this place. It has literally been in this location for over 100 years. Try their beef clog. Served on butcher paper and no sauce allowed here.

There is a can't miss place in Memphis, Tenn. called Rendevous(sp?) located in Downtown Memphis near the Peabody Hotel. I go there everytime I am in Memphis on business!

Another vote for Pap's Leon in Yorktown and Smitty's in Lockhart.
I wasn't really fond of Cruz' in Lockhart. Or the famed City Market in Luling.

I had the chance to get some decent 'Q at a little place in NC. It was about a half hour west of the Uwharrie National forest...a great place to take some newbies four wheelin'

I'm thinking it may have been in Albermarle, right on highway 24. If nothing else, they knew their pulled pork and their sweet tea.

In looking at more maps, it was actually just outside of charlotte, but I don't remember the highway. I'm gonna be hitting the place again in april as my father and I are taking some much needed R&R down to the Uwharrie National Forest with a group of Isuzu enthusiasts.

Hi Guys - First thing is if it's a BBQ Resturaunt it's got my vote as being good. Much rather grab a few ribs or a quick Brisket Sandwich for lunch then a taco or Big Mac. However, I've come to love and appreicate the guy's like us, who've parked a pit on the side of a piece of property and has done everything he can to meet country health dept. rules and is serving right out of the pit.
Three places come to mind: Blazin Bills near the corner of W. Little York and Brittmore in Houston and Lip Smakin Charlies on Hiway 1488 near 242 just North of The Woodlands. Oh and by the way, every time I head into Austin I like to stop at Dusty's in Manor. right there on 290.

If we're talking about full blown restaurants, then I really like the Texas Roadhouse in Conroe, TX. I also agree that lip smacking Charlie's is really good, and there is another small place in Conroe called Gene's hickory hut on south Frazier that is really good. Don't forget McKenzies on North Frazier and on the square, either.

There is a Texas Roadhouse outside of Corpus Christi. I wonder if it is the same owners/chain.

Probably, they're popping up all over. They have good ribs and they have a dark red chili that kicks ***!

I've always heard that the Salt Lick in Driftwood, Texas has great barbecue. Since I can't get to Houston to get good barbecue from TexasBBQRub, I'll be heading there tomorrow night. I'll let y'all know how it is.

Ok, so the Salt Lick does live up to it's reputation. It must, the place is HUGE, located a good half hour southwest of Austin and on a cool rainy Friday night it was packed! The chicken was kinda bland and the sausage ordinary, but the ribs and brisket were tender and flavorful! Potatoes not impressive but coleslaw was pretty good and I normally eat it. The sauce was different. Rather sweet but I bit tangy and definitely good. Rasberry cobbler was good too. :D

I used to be a pharmaceutical rep and my territory covered a lot of the small towns in Central TX, so I made it a point to try out out-of-the-way BBQ places. One day I walked into a little place right off of HWY 71 in Bastrop, on the right hand side if you're going east, called "Billy's BBQ". As I walked in, all conversation ceased; I was not only the only person wearing a tie in the whole place, it looked like I was the only one who didn't know everyone else there. Undaunted, I ordered some brisket and some sausage. They were FANTASTIC, especially the brisket. After that I used to eat there all the time. If you like mutton, it's one of the few places I've been to where it isn't swimming in fat, it was really lean and tender and tasty.

I really recommend the place, especially if you don't mind a simple, down-home atmosphere and zero frills.

Always good to find a new spot. I have passed by there at least 50 times and always wondered how it was. Will have to make a stop next trip thru there. I got a place in Cistern not far from there and when I go to Home Depot or Tractor Supply it is in Bastrop. Thanks for the info.

Can anyone give me some names of restaurants that serve Memphis style ribs in the north east? I'm from Quebec but can travel for good 'Q if necessary. Anywhere within a five hour drive is good. So if you have a recommendation in: Mass., NY, NH, VT, Me, or Quebec or Ontario I'd love to hear about it.

BTW, I'm looking into Dinasoar BBQ.

I have to agree with Blake, Smitty's in Lockhart is excellent! Their sausage is a tad spicy and the best ever!

I just tried Cooper's in Mason on my way to Albuquerque. The briskett had a nice rub and was the best. With a little of their sauce it was perfect. The sausage was pretty good too, but the ribs were dry. On my way back to Texas I'll have to try their goat.

Good Morning

Every now and then you stumble across something that's just not good - although expectations were high. Was in downtown Houston at the Park Mall on Fannin / San Jacinto - had to meet some clients in the Chevron tower. Stopped by their food mall and realized that Otto's (known as George Bush Sr. favorite place) had opened up a place in the mall. The original on Memorial was almost okay, however the mall outlet was just not good.

Had a sliced beef sandwich / sauce on the side. Meat had a little smoke ring and no smoke flavor. It was just a good roasted brisket sandwich. I know it's hard to really smoke up some beef when your in the middle of an upscale shopping center, however I think they could've at least picked it up a little with some liquid smoke.

But then again I keep reminding myself that I'm comparing against my own briskets and those of friends who all have pits, time, good rubs and good wood.

Enjoy the weekend.

Lee:
Yeah one thing we do lose sight of sometimes is the fact that we as BBQ'ers can spend more time and give more attention to our briskets, ribs, and other meats as do these BBQ restaurants taht we hear so much about. As a result we (and I find myself) judging meat cooked at a large restaurants against our own and let's face it there is no comparison. We have time and better rubs and tender loving care to give our meats whereas BBQ restaurants for the most part use gas fired ovens or some other means to cook most of their meats with.

But I must agree with you about Otto's BBQ in Houston. They seem to be expanding to other locations from the original on Memorial. That one was pretty good (even though I have not eaten there in years) but they opened another one on the SW side of Houston, in the Fountains in Stafford, and it is terrible. So sometimes bigger is not always better.

Hey y'all. Just discovered the forum. Anyway, after reading the thread about great Q joints around the country, let me add my 2 cents worth about the BEST Q Joints in my part of the state. [b]The Texas legislature designated Lockhart (http://www.lockhart-tx.org/bbq.html) the barbecue capital of Texas. It's 38 miles east-southeast of Austin. Kreuz Market is the most famous of the big 3 in the town. The other 2 being Smitty's and Blacks. A famous family feud between brother and sister resulted in the creation of Smitty's which is located where the original Kreuz market was. The brother split and moved Kreuz out on highway 183 while the sister kept the original building and started Smitty's. Blacks have operated the oldest family owned joint in the state.

Moving a little north on highway 290 about 20 miles east of Austin is the town of Elgin which is the sausage capital of Texas. Like Lockhart, Elgin has a big 3. Southside Market & Barbecue is the most famous. They're known for their Elgin hot sausage. It's really not all that hot, but it sure is good. It's also a butcher shop and they have good brisket, pork ribs, pork butts, and turkey. Just down the road is Meyer's smokehouse, home of the famous Meyer's sausage. Garlic, Sage, and Regular. The best Q joint in Elgin IMO is a little joint in the old section of town called Cross-Town. Really good sausage, brisket and ribs. Their sauce is an old southern style Vinegar, pepper and Ketchup mix. Very Good.

Now we go to an old cotton town about 40 miles northeast of Austin called Taylor. Like the other 2 towns, it also has a big 3. Louie Mueller's Barbecue is the oldest. Some of the best pepper rubbed brisket you'll ever eat. Good pork ribs too. Next is Taylor Cafe which is owned by Vencil Mares, the Dean of central Texas pit bosses. He got his start in the Q business during World War 2. The guy must be in his early 80s, but he's still going strong. Great sausage, ribs and brisket. It's my favorite in Taylor. Sauce is another old southern style with just Vinegar, Ketchup and peppers. Finally there's Rudy Mikeska's joint. His family is known as the First Family of Texas barbecue. Has something like 5 brothers and they all have Q joints scattered around the state. I know one brother has a place in Columbus on Internstate 10.

The Salt Lick which is 30 miles southwest of Austin in ranch country goes back to 1969. The late Thurmond Thomas opened up the joint on the ranch where he was born. His family came to Texas from Northern Alabama after the civil war. The 2 buildings where people eat are like old limestone bunkhouses. The place is a zoo. On the weekends if you don't get there before 5, expect a minimum of an one hour wait. They provide live music outside when the weather is good making the wait not so bad. Bring your own beer because most of Hay's county where it's located is dry. It used to be not like this. I've been eating at the Lick since the year it opened. About 10yrs ago, NBC nightly news came in and did little segement on the joint. People magazine followed and they wrote that it had the best pork ribs in the country. Then the movie star Sandra Bullock moved to Austin and in a Texas Monthly article said it was her favorite restuarant in Texas. The place just exploded. On a typical weekend day they'll have 3-4 thousand customers. So in my opinion, the quality has dropped over the years. But what keeps me coming back is their sauce. It's a Mustard Vinegar based that has a sweet tang to it. It's really very good stuff.

Finally, Cooper's old time Pit Barbecue in Lano about 70 miles west northwest of Austin. Very basic rustic joint. Cook their Q on burned down mesquite wood. Burn it down to coals and then shovel the coals into pits. Basic salt and pepper rub. Their sauce is a brisket juice, Vinegar, and ketchup sauce. Like the Salt Lick, Cooper's has gotten too famous thus the quality has dropped a little bit. Cooper's catered the Dubya Bush inaugural back in January of 2001. He thinks they have the best ribs in the state.

Okay, that sums up Central Texas Q joints from a native.

First thanks to JimBobTex as he has summed up the better places to go in Central Texas. God bless those German immigrants who came to Texas in the 1800's and figured out how to cook brisket and added their touch to sausage. I vote for the places in Lockhart but will get to Elgin, Taylor, and Llano for the others one of these days.

Spent the weekend doing some BBQ cooking for a bunch of crazy fun-loving 4X4 boys in Mason. Passed by and tried to get a bite at Cooper's in Mason but he was closed when I went by. Heard it is a good one but missed this opportunity to try it out. Anyway, we had a blast out in Mason and cooked for a bunch. Cooked brisket and ribs. They tore them up.

Just a quick report on Kruz's Market on HWY 183 in Lockhart, Texas. It had been a few years since I went by Kruz's market and the new location (because of the family split) is just a heck of a place to see. It is new and does not have the smae atmosphere as the old Kruz' Market (which is now Smitty's) but heck it must be 20,000 ft building sits over 500 folks. The BBQ was as good as I remember it. I still am not a huge fan of nothing on the meat but salt and pepper (not enough flavor and the pepper is too over whelming) but it is worth the stop and visit. Dang that is a big building they built there, so stop by there and enjoy. If it is true atmosphere you want with some good Q go to Smitty's in the old location. Still love the fire in the floor there.

Later.

good Q in ct is like finding the holy grail. doubt Texans would approve of these but ct's 5 best in my opinion are 1. Uncle Willies Orange and Waterbury 2. Little Marks Big BBQ in Vernon 3. Taste of Texas in S Winsor area 4. Cookhouse in New Milford 5. SouthernQue in Meriden.
these are not in order and cover different Q regional styles. Texas you should send Q-aid to the underdeveloped nieghbors in ct, it is needed desperately. send any aid packages to me and iwill do my best to eat I mean distribute them

What a coincidence! I just ate at a great one in Spring Hill, Kansas yesterday called K M Barbecue. I knew it was going to be good, because it was one of those old , kinda, ramshakle lookin houses and, every cop in a ten mile radius (including the state boys) was there.Got the combo dinner with fries and beans and had a good local root beer. Meat was cued pork(tenderloin sliced paper thin), chopped and sliced brisket, and three bones of spares all with the ubiquitous two slices of white bread on top. Served without sauce. It was really good stuff done by folks who had been doin it a long time. Two of us ate well for $ 18. Sauce was just OK. Alot of coarse black pepper. Not really sweet or spicy. Kinda inocuous!
I gotta admit, I've neverreally been disappointed in any of the restaraunt cue I've run across. Woodman

Here we go Jake's Rib in Chickasha Ok for an appetizer is thier two bbq sauces hot and mild servied with just bread and the curly fries are a meal alone and you can get a family meal that feeds up to six for about 35 dollars that comes with four meats and six sides. Oh and if you like cobbler they have some good stuff. Here in El Paso there are two decent places one is the BBQ Company and the other the State Line.

O/K ya"ll Since I used to drive semi's for years. I have found a couple places along my routes. 1 in particular that stands out in my mind, is a place in Columbia, S,C. called Maurice Bessinger's "Piggy Park". They have been on food network before & If you want good Carolina based BBQ, that's the place to go. Be advised tho, they use a Mustard based BBQ sauce that is pretty good. It's a little pricey tho.But it's a good place to go. You can even eat in your car/truck if you wanna, kinda like a drive in. Sorta like a Sonic style of service. But there is sit down service too.
Another restaurant chain is Sonny's BBQ that I think that is pretty good. They are all over Fla., most of Ga. Parts of Al., & 1 in W.Monroe La.They are spreading out all over the southeast U.S.
There is a place in Waskom, Tx. called Jim's BBQ, they serve good food as well, Waskom for those who don't know is Right on the Tx. La.state line on I-20.That's it for me & my extensive knowledge.

Hey Herper 62, I am wanting to see about comming up that way & see about opening up a real pit smoked BBQ place in the N-east. What would you think?I have been seriously considering it. Send me an E-mail sometime if you would. I would like to talk to you.

STATE LINE BBQ just ouside of El Paso is out of this world !!! Everything they have is EXCELLENT. The brisket is always killer, the ribs are great, smoked chicken and turkey are both killer as well as the smoked sausage......BUT......the BREAD PUDDING is to die for

Anyone near there......it's on I-10 at the Sunland Park exit......anyone that goes and isn't happy I'll give you your money back :D

I'll add one that changed my whole outlook on ribs. Before I ate this guy's ribs I had decided I didn't like those greasy messy hardly any meat things. The place is Julius Rib Cage in Wichita KS. Not in the greatest area and shared the building with a check cashing place and a liquor store, great combo, but good Q. I had eaten there a lot but never the ribs so one day he asked me if I'd ever tried the ribs and I told him I didn't like ribs, he said "here try mine". I now make my own of course a copy his but if back in Wichita I know where I'll go.

I'll put a plug in for Pat's BBQ in Salt Lake City. Great BBQ and great live music in the back room. The ribs are excellent and the burnt ends on Fridays are fantastic.

Pat's has become so popular in the last year that he has to keep expanding. Parking became a problem so he bought a dirt lot down the street and shuttles people back and forth in a golf cart (I think he calls it the Rib Runner 8) ).

Well if anyone ever finds themselves in the northeast Ohio area, there is a place that's owned and operated by former Browns player Al "Bubba" Baker. It's simply called Bubba's BBQ. One of the only places around here that isn't a chain. He's from the south and he has some really good food. You can even see him there and talk to him like he's an old friend (a really big old friend as he's got to be close to 7 feet tall).
I do have plans to get to the Salt lick next time I'm in Texas if not just to see how that place operates. I saw it on the $40.00 a day show that Rachel Ray used to do and any place that can seat 800 people and still have a line to get in has to be half way decent.

I gotta represent for Memphis here a little. The BBQ Shop on Madison Ave is a must for anyone that goes to Memphis. Great Ribs, pulled pork sandwiches served on Texas Toast, and great BBQ Spaghetti. Corky's is always a solid choice. Germantown Commissary on Germantown Rd is one of my favorites. Hard to find parking, but well worth the trouble. Central BBQ on Central near the Liberty Bowl in Midtown has great Ribs and pulled pork. They have a new location on Summer Ave as well. If on Beale Street, try the Ribs at Blues City Cafe. If you get out Hwy 70 outside of Memphis, go to Mason Tn, to Bozos BBQ. Been there forever, and always good pulled pork. The hot sauce is Very hot ! While in Mason, might as well get some of the best fried chicken in the world from the original Gus's . There is one downtown Memphis now if you can't get to the original, which was named one of the top 10 places in the world to go out your way for a meal by GQ magazine a few years back. Neelys, Interstate, and Cozy Corner are all solid choices for good Q as well.

I've been to Kreuz's, Smitty's, and City Market and they're all very good. Likewise with Central BBQ in Memphis.

I'll also add a couple of new ones. The Whole Hog Cafe in Little Rock, AR. Run by a comp cooker who's won at MIM. The second one is Craig's BBQ in DeVall's Bluff, AR. Old family run place that's been there seemingly forever. Great, but small, sliced pork sammies with a fruit based BBQ sauce. When you finish there ya can head across the highway to another family member's pie shop for dessert.

This last weekend we to a trip to Austin via 290. Stopped in Elgin at Meyer's.
And i must say i was pretty inpressed with the brisket. I'm very critical of restraunt brisket but thiers was outstanding. I've bought the sausage before and it's awesome. On the way back, we stopped again, grabbed a sliced brisket to go, 5lbs of the original saugage for later cooks and roll of jalapeno summer sausage. The summer sausage is about gone. The sauce was really good and so was the hot sauce they had on the table, the house vinager red pepper sauce. I had my wife put a bottle in her purse :D.

Huckelberry's in Fanning Springs Florida. Good BBQ and funky off the track atmosphere. Also for anybody traveling on I- 95 through Georgia-- Jacks BBQ has two locations right off the road. one off exit 7 and the other off exit 14. Woodbine Georgia. Excellent ribs, pretty good brisket, and he makes his own sauce which is very good and for sale.

Salt Lick used to be my #1. However...

Danny's BBQ in Carlsbad, NM. Used to be a DQ which sold about 11% DQ product and 89% Q. He got out of his contract with DQ but still does the best Q out there.

Danny Gaulden is his name, and he is the Q guru, I promise.

It's kinda nice when someone sticks it to the corporate types and goes it alone.
I've never been to New Mexico but I'll keep it on my list.

Went to Sonny Bryan's about a month ago with my daughter we both loved the warm sauce and the meat was good. I had the Brisket and Anne had the ribs. Anne liked it so much she bought herself a T shirt.

Eastern NC, B's BarBQue in Greenville on B's Barbeque Rd (it is easy to remember the name). Best pit cooked pulled pork with a vinegar pepper sauce I have ever had. Really bad ambiance, but you have to get there early because when they run out of food, they close the doors and that can happen as early as a little after noon. Being raised in Oklahoma I can't call it 'Q, but it is really a fine pig vinegarette.

For a real treat, order a chicken sandwich.

If you get to Phoenix you must go to Honey Bears, they have two locations. They have been voted number one more times then I can count. Also try the BBQ Company in Tempe and Phoenix, they have won over 25 awards for their BBQ.

Gotta go with Mr. Vencil in Taylor at the Taylor Cafe. Everybody who loves cue should go there before he becomes celestially discharged. Best hot guts around. Rest of it is real good too.

Any of y'all know where that BBQ church in Huntsville, Texas is at.
I've heard it was good.

The church is Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church (a.k.a. "The Church of The Holy Smoke"). It's on Montgomery Road just about a mile southeast of the Sam Houston State Univ. campus.

I used to eat lunch there once a week during my senior year at SHSU. The sausage is OK, but the ribs are made with "devine intervention".:D
