Charcoal in a Gator ?

I have a 20" x 42" Gator with an upright smoker. I want to burn charcoal occasionally when time or wet wood dictates. I have made a charcoal basket to slide in the firebox door but don't know how much charcoal to start with ? If anyone has experience with burning charcoal in an offset, I would appreciate your comments. Thanks

PS: Has anyone tried the Minion Method of burning charcoal in an offset ? If so, what changes did you make ?
