View Full Version : Question of balance
Woodman
06-09-2004, 11:39 AM
I posted this question on another forum awhile back and had some fun with it so here goes: Since I often have to get up at about 3:00 am to get the pit heated up, and the food going in order to eat at a reasonable hour, I spend a good part of the morning hours drinking about a pot and a half of good strong coffee. The question is, according to pitmaster etiquette, at what point in the day is it considered proper to make the switch to beer? Is there a magic hour? or, is it just once you've gotten to the point where your food is cooked enough that you probably can't ruin it if you're drunk?-Woodman

We'll Woodman you took the words out of my mouth. I have had many pepole talk about this dilemma. My opinion is that it is Q ediquette to drink 3-4 cups of coffee, by 7am I am on the first Bloody Mary and by 9am I am in shape to "pop" the first brew open, 8) 8) 8) then the PARTY'S ON for the day. Just my thinkin" of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk to me all my fellow Q'ers!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I was always told that one shouldn't start drinking beer or the likes before noon.
AND, that it had to be after noon somewhere in the world at any given time.

i AM NOT THE DRINKIN KIND SO JUST INVITE ME TO YOUR NEXT COOK AND YALL CAN GIT IT ON ON DAY LONG! COURSE YA MIGHT LOOK UP AND FIND THE FOOD ALL GONE DUE TO THE HEAVY SAMPLIN REQURIED WHEN ONE COOKS.

Ya know I used to do some drinking while I was cooking but had to slow down a bit. Hell too many head first falls in the woodpile in the middle of the night and no help around. And I hate to say it but I am not getting any younger so I have slowed down a bit in my older years.
But the way it goes is to drink a few brews whenever you want to start and not worry about what anyone thinks. By the way the bloody mary sounds good too.

Yeah I kinda had a few choice words to say as I fell head first in the woodpile. But then again, I had had a bit to much to drink and it was the next day that I discovered the hole in my head where the asphalt won the butting contest.
I guess this is what happens when you are a stick burner in the middle of the night. Dang asphalt got in the way of the logs.

Buckeye, is Betsy yer pit , or yer wife? Either way, I'd just as soon not think of you and sex in the same sentence......specially if the answer is your pit! And, if that is indeed the case? Don't be inviting me over for any Q

Hey Baker, Must be 5 in Spokane right now from the looks of things! Actually, I usually switch to beer about two hours before I'm ready to start carving. Problem with me is, I get so filled up with the "liquid bread" that I'm too full to eat much BBQ. That's OK though, because like many of you, although I love good Q, I'm really doing it cause I love to cook for others!

"Question of Balance" is the title of this post so I guess I will answer it the best I can.
Personally, as long as you have a ice cold beer in "each" hand, there will be no problem with your "balance"! :P

Since I only drink one beer at a time, I only want "one more beer".
When my wife and I first started dating, she use to always get me "one more beer". Now she has me figured out and she tells me to get my own "one more beer".

Ya know....I am going to like this BBQ thing! You guys drink, party with other folks that appreciate your knowledge and effort, pick on each other and eat well seasoned meat cooked just right! :D
Me, I do not drink at all, & when I do; it;s Margretta's.
I have found a heavy indica will have me drinking coffee till around noon, with a few pic me ups along the way, while a nice sativa with a endless glass of Ice-decaf-tea will have me off coffee early & keep me cooking/picking & grinning/eating all day.

Here is party drink recipe for ya:
Take a small cooler (like the styrofoam ones at K-mart). Add one stroe bought bag ice cubes, 1 half gallon Vodka, 3/4 a 5lb bag of sugar, the juice of 8 lemons, those lemons then sliced after squeezing and added. Wait about 10 mins for the vodka to melt some of the ice. Add water until your taste buds fool you into thinking you're drinking lemonade! Congrats! You are now enjoying a wonderful beverage known as "Yucca".
Free Advice: use a good brand of Vodka so you don't yuk up the "Yucca"!!

Did somebody say COORS LITE  All this talk about beer makes me want one. I like to think that Beer Etiquette (however that is spelled) is my guys getting me a cold one before the one in my hand runs out. :P
On a serious note, you go to any competition and you will find that just about everyone is drinking no matter what time of day or night it is. As far as cooking at home, who cares. You are at home and can do anything you like when you like.
With that said, it is Friday and a holiday weekend. My boy may be born today and/or my new backyard pit delivered today. With all that, it is beer time.
Any justification will do. :D :) 8)
Have a great weekend. Ritch

My 2 cents on this subject however, we first must ask ourselves an important question. Why did you quit drinking from the night before? Pop a caffeine pill and pop another beer.
Granted the goal is not to get so wasted you pass out however, if you can maintain proper buzzage when the party kicks into full swing you are already raring to go.
Do like my friend, Roy. Every morning at the golf course, he would start with half a cup of coffee at about 7-7:30. He would take a couple of small drinks, complain about the taste of coffee in general, then open a Bud.
I finally asked him why he drank coffee if he hated it so much.
"I think anyone who starts the day with beer has a drinking problem, so...I start the day with coffee."

When I get sick of drinking coffee I stop and then switch to beer after twelve noon. If I've had so much coffee that I all jittery I might sneak a shot of Whiskey but I never start full rocks glasses of Bourbon till after 4:00pm. That way I can go all day and my wife does't get all pissy about it.

I figure that, if you have to make rules about drinking, you have a drinking problem. So, I say RULES SCHMULES! :D
