What's the best Charcoal Brand to use that produces very little ash?

I have heard that Kingsford is very ashy?

Big Rob,

You have asked a question similiar to'

"How do I cook a Brisket?"

Everyone will have an opinion about what they like. I'll post up some of my own thoughts once I get home. Yes, Kingsford is one of the "ashiest" charcoal briquetts made and, in my opinion, there are better alternatives. I will also post up a "Charcoal Database" website that is very informative for you to consider.

the nakedwhiz website is very informative.

I have a WSM and a Weber Platinum kettle.

For the WSM, I use Kingsford. It does tend to be ashy, but it is also very consistant and I can always go for more than 14 or 15 hours without adding fuel. I haven't cooked yet in a good wind, but that would increase fuel consumption a tad.

With my kettle, I like to use lump. Wally World has several good brands of lump. Kamada lump is suppose to be pretty good, but I haven't had the opportunity to use it. Cowboy Charcoal is also usually good.

nakedwiz will have the best info on Lump.

I see the Naked Whiz website got posted. Alot of good information for you to consider. I have used the Coconut KAMADO extruded charcoal and it is excellent in terms of BTU's per unit of charcoal and virtually ashless. You get twice the BTU's or burning energy than you do with most other charcoals so the cost of operation becomes very small. The charcoal functions as an ideal energy source should. It produces heat and adds very little else to the taste of your cooks.

The Naked Whiz describes it in more detail.

Kingsford is ashy, a pain in the ***, but produces a pretty good end product (especially for the price). I use Sugartown lump (Kingsford also) and have good results.

Heat + Flavor = good results.

I really don't mind cleaning the firebox more often if I have to. 8)

Hi Fellow Seekers of the thin blue smoke!

This is a newbie from Detroit chimin' in.... I checked out the Naked Whiz website and discovered that the Maple Leaf is the world's best charcoal. Turns out the Canadian version of Home Depot sells it just across the border in Windsor for just $11 canadian (close to $7 US) for a 17lb bag. It's flavor is awesome! Again...this is a newbie talkin! :P :P

They may help ya.

Pure Wood is the choice of BBQ purest - if not/can't; go with a hardwood charcoal & pellets.

Good cooking to ya
