Fellow Q Brotha's,
If anyone can could you tell me what kind of tree this is? It is in my backyard but it is dead died over the 6 month period we were in Iraq last yr. I know it's a hard wood but would like to know what kind exactly so it doesn't go to waste if it's good for smoking. I am new to the board but have been Q'in for a while i am originally from Minerall Wells Tx now in El Paso not exactly BBQ central. Any help would be appreciated will also include some pics of some Q i did last weekend.

The leaves look like an oleander. If so, don't eat it or burn the wood. the smoke is responsible or killing more people than eating the leaves it!

The leaves do look just like oleander but I've never seen it any bigger than a bush (course theres a bunch of things "i've never seen")

Out of curiosity do you have a greyhound dog? The circle of dead grass looks like a greyhound has been walking in a circle.

Howdy grillmaster, I thought that tree looked familiar! :D

I still don't know what it is, I just remember the tree. Does it or did it ever flower? Although oleanders are toxic they are sought after for the beautiful blossoms.

Good luck.

Yep its me see you new here too. No it doesn't flower so it wouldn't be oleander.

The leaves look like an oleander bush
The tree looks like a mesquite

grillmaster....yeah that is definetely not an Oleander......leaves appear to be that of a willow, but I'm almost sure not a black willow as those are found mainly near the water or in wetter soils than that of El Paso. I can only guess that it is most definetly a willow or in the willow family and I wanna say there are 2-3 hundred different species so good luck and let us know if you find out what it is.....

My guess: A Western Soapberry http://www.naturesongs.com/vvplants/soapberry.html

OR

Honey Mesquite http://uvalde.tamu.edu/herbarium/prgl.htm, or a Desert Willow http://www.naturesongs.com/vvplants/desertwillow.html

Grill,

I don't know if it exists down there or not but up here we have an extension office that if you take a sample of the tree leaves in they can tell you what it is. Ours is with the local college so might want to call that and see if they have something like this.

I realize this is Texas and there is probably 3 colleges in the whole state but driving 10 hours to get it checked out for your own safety may not be a bad idea.
