When customers want to upgrade/change gauges from our standard Gator Pit one's, it is Ashcroft they request. Little more industrial and have made a name for accuracy and longevity over the years. But like everything else that is Great, you will pay for them. Around $50 to $60 bucks per gauge (stainless steel, 2.5" stem, 3" white dial up to around 550 degrees). Recently, I pulled my gauges out of my TL and inserted AC to check my gauges and the temps were exactly the same on the AC as my gauges. In reality, are AC's better? I would say better over most you would find at a retail store for around $20.

My .02's worth.

Rich,
Not worried about the one used in pits, I was asking about the ones used to measure temp of meats, unless they are the same.

Has Maverick came out with there new design yet? I understood it was going to work up to a 300 ft distance and the probes were to have a 6 ft wire. Anyone know anything?

Well I sure like your toon and the best gauge come from Walmart. Its about 4.99 and reads instant. Big dial to help old blind guys plust the point end is ideal for seeing if things pass the poke test. Thats all you need. Pit temp do just fine to lay your hand on there. If you cant keep it on there long..its too hot. Otherwise it be ok. 3 seconds be about 250. 1 second be hotter than that etc.

DR, that had to be your eyeballs. You been drinking while cooking again. Don't lie. I have photos of you and Woodman and those weren't soda cans your hands.

BigWheel is right on with the touch check. Do that myself. Put my hand on the lid and if I have to pull off about 5 secs she is running around 225 degrees.

I agree with Ritch about the Thermapen. I really like mine. I managed to pick up a second one on eBay for $30 including shipping. Only problem is it reads in degrees Centigrade. I just made up a little conversion chart and laminated it for a cheat sheet.

BBQinFL,

Sounds like you might have bought the European model! I'll check out the instructions and see if there is any way to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Ain't nuttin simple

to get deg. F, multiply reading by 1.8 and add 32 degrees.

example

100C x 1.8 + 32 = 212F

Mine reads F. At least, I hope it does. Maybe that explains a few things! :)

Yep, they have them that read in F. My first one does. The one I picked up on eBay was from a guy who lived in London. That's why it reads in C.

I called Thermoworks and they said there isn't a way to change it, except to replace the internal circuit board. Not worth it.

I figured $30 was cheap. And other than reading in C, its identical to the one I got here.

Now I cook the brisket til it gets to 75C, foil it & add some stock, then stick it back on until it gets to 90C... :)

Sounds like you got a great deal and the brisket cooks twice as fast!

I just checked out the Thermapen web site. Looks like a winner to me!. Just picked one up. Kind of expensive but sounds like a good investment in good Q.

Thanks for the info. Great site you got here!
