that's what i'm talkin about! started last night. wanted to try an over nighter, not an over weeker! butts rubbed with blues hog, brisket rubbed with bills. (the last of it ..for the moment). attached the guru, everything cool. set at 250* for the pit, 190* for brisket.

still going good when i woke up. the guru really turns the lump and kingsford into ash pretty quick and i figure that my demise was 1) not having enough of that and 2) takin a nap without stokin the fire! i know, woody! :)

at any rate, just pulled and wrapped the brisket at 190*. butts still on with the meat probe which says they're about 15* from bein done.

between my last (first WSM) cook last weekend and this one, i've about had it. good thing i threw in a chicken, or i would've had soup again for dinner!

however, do love the guru. i do not like being up at night. too old for that stuff. so that's good. and learned to keep up the coals! i will be real interested in how this all tastes after all this cook time. i will let you know. T

Hey ST, Don't ya know that that's half the fun of doing al all nighter BBQ cook? That's staying up all night & watching Ronco infomercials when everything else has gone offa the air?  :P :P Besides, the food just tastes better

Mic - This Guru is slicker than snail snot. I know it is not for the purist, but it really seems to work well. I am in the middle of a Guru cook right now and have been doing other stuff all day.

Kaz I am with you there. As much as I like playing with my Klose, today has been a great Q day. You figure out about the offset cooker on autopilot and let me know.

ok! first off, i really really love that guru. i work a lot and don't have the time to spend tending to the fire but still want good Q. it is simple to set up. made some mistakes for this first cook, but now i have a better idea. lots of good info on the virtual weber forum for guru users.

yeah, the cost is more than the WSM, but, like everything else, it all depends on your priorities and what is important to you.

my cook turned into a 24 hour cook because i didn't check the fuel before i took my leetle siesta! probably lost a couple hours there. the fan "puffs" when all is right. mine was almost continually blowing because of the lack of fuel. lesson learned.

the pork butts were great, but probably a little dry due to the extra long cook. the brisket is another story! i have done probably 6 briskets, and always wondered why they taste just like roast beef? i can do roast beef in the oven! anyway, this brisket was what i thought it should taste like. more work needs to be done, but now worth playing with.

long story short, if ya wants some sleep and still have great Q, get a guru! T

There's a lot of reading about the Guru on the wsm site, seems it would be nice to have when the wind kicks up and blows down the stack, well i'm
going back and reading some more, seems like lots of fun.

say T, I;m hopeing to get my guru tomarrow ordered it last week.. can you go into what you learned about how much fuel you needed when you were cooking. and some of the does and don't you may have learned when useing the guru.. if anyone has learned any thing that may cut down on learning time on the guru. it may help all of us to learn about what to do and the what not to do in its use...Curt

curt. will do! want to give you my best so if you can wait till tomorrow night, i will give you my best.

had already replied, but it didn't come out the way i wanted it to. T

so, curt, what i found out about the fuel, is that you need to keep it up. if there isn't enough, the guru will just keep blowing your coals and you'll have to add more. i ended up lighting two more chimneys and periodically adding more lump to get the fire up.

the guru was easy to set up and as far as i could tell, the temps matched the therm i had in the top vent. i attched the pit probe to the elbow on the meat probe.

the butt and the brisket were both very tender. of course they were on for 24 hours! this is actually the first time i have liked the brisket. all other times it just tasted like roast beast.

all in all, i am very happy with the purchase for overnight cooks. let us know how your first one comes out. T

hi, curt. the ramp feature was on so i just left it. don't worry about messing anything up, you won't. you watch, you will be very happy with your cook! load the whole thing up and let her rip. T
