View Full Version : Celebration BBQ
I guess that I will need to be stocking up on Texas BBQ Rub again.
Around the middle of July my son is going to be home for the first time since January. He is with the 10th Mountain Infantry and has been in the middle of the stuff in Baghdad.
He called me yesterday and told me that he was back at Ft Drum NY (did not even expect him for another week or two) so we are relieved. :D :D :D :D
So I am going to be cooking up a storm when he gets home. He is wanting some ribs, brisket, sausage etc. just for starters. :D
I don't post a lot but I read and learn alot from you guys and gals.
The info here has saved me more than once. :P
Thanks
Roy

Thanks Buckeye
You know I don't know if he is going to have another rotation over there or not. I know that he said that this one was worse then the first time he was over there.
So we are going to have plenty of BBQ and cold beer and family around when he comes home to see us.

RG45,
We did the same thing last March. Good friends son came back from some real nasty stuff in Baghdad. We cooked briskets, ribs, chicken etc.
Had a great party to welcome him back.
Give your son a big handshake for me. God Bless em

Hey Roy! Tell your boy it is good to still have some real men who have the balls to go and do what is right ! After 911, I was ready to go myself! I hope he's done, but I'm glad he's there! Woodrow
ps. It is also good to have parents around who realize that it is not always up to "someone else's" kid to do the dirty work. War is not a good thing, but at some point, there has to be a resolve of the people to do what is necessary. I am afraid that , for the most part, we no longer have that resolve. I blame television. Seriously. It is not good for us to see what goes on there. It is not necessary. If a draft is ever implemented, I cannot imagine the chaos. WM

Hey Woody.....I'm feelin' ya on that.
I got a son who's in tha Navy (git'n out on me****al disabilitee next month) an it pisses me off that he "tells" hiz sister not ta go inta tha service. Hell...he made it cleer ta me that he weren't goin inta tha service.......funny how life kin change yer mind when u run outa opshuns. (That's a hole nutha storee.)
Anyway, my nephew iz bout ta go inta a Youth Challenge Program...for ungovernable kids (I think it's military oriented) fer 6 months........he's 17 an wood be a senior in tha fall....but this program will allow him ta git hiz GED in December. When my wife axed my sister if he wuz goin inta tha service afterwerd......she replied "oh no...we ain't havin that". My thing iz..... parents don't wunt their kid ta join tha military fer feer of havin ta go ta war......but it's okay fer sumbodee elses kid ta die so they kin sit back an enjoy tha freedom that other kids/men/women fight for an die for. I had ta git my wife ta see that 2 yeers before our son enlisted. She had tha same attitude. How dare any parent tell their son or daughter not ta join tha Armed Services. That's tha epitamee of selfish.
  WHOA!!!! :o :o (jus fell offa my soapbox :P )
I appreciate all the kind words and I would love to take credit for my son, but he made his own choices and I thought that it was great.
After 9/11 I called the Marines and asked if I could go. They told me that I was to old. I told them that I could probably out shoot most of who they had in the service and I would bring my own gun and ammo also :D They still said no :( . I would not be able to out run the young ones but would have been honored to serve with them.
I started this out having to with BBQ and if the mods want to move it please feel free to.
I am proud of my son and he has seen and done things that I can only imagine. They lost 2 of their guys and 8 wounded about a month ago, they were the push behind "Operation Squeeze Play" where they captured 285 of the bad guys. We did not know for 2 days if he was on the list of the dead, wounded or okay. When we found out that he was okay we were releived but then felt bad because someone else's son was not coming home.
GOD Bless our troops and their families.
You guys are all great and entertaining and a cornucopia of information (my wife taught me those big words) :)

Please let him know there are many many folks that appreciate what he and his brothers in arms do for everyone, especially the American citizen.
Stay safe

 Roy I can tell you are a great Dad and have a wonderful Son. Thank him for keeping our way of life safe. I make it a habbit to thank all the members of our Armed Forces as they shop at our Home Depot.
BBQ101- Thank you for the kind words. I also know that it means a lot to the guys that you talk to at your store.
Bigwheel - I know that he and several others have some of the same type of thinking.
Grillmaster - I am sure that Dave would thank you for the drink. I am also sure that there is a serious amount of beer and other drinks that will be consumed this weekend at Drum. I also want to thank you for your service and glad that you made it back from the sandbox okay.
TarRiver - I still consider myself a rookie. I have learned a tremendous amount from reading and using the info I have received here. My wife and I are thinking about trying to make our own rub, but we like TexasBBQ Rub alot. so we will see.
Thanks again

Hey Roy,
Glad your boy made it back safely. Thank him for me and make sure you feed him plenty of cold ones, he deserves them.
Today my wife is part of a casualty notification team. An active duty army guy from the next town over died yesterday over there serving his country proudly. My wife will be the liason between the army and the family. I am very proud of my wife but I can't wait until she retires in October of 2006.

 Thats a tough job your Mrs has to do. I had to tell my wifes Grandparents when there daughter died. One of the hardest thing I have ever done.
Deuce
Tell your wife thank you. I could not imagine the emotions that she has to deal with on a regular basis. We were wondering more than once (when we did not hear from our son on the normal basis) if we were going to get a knock at our door. Thank God we did not, but there were alot of others that did get that knock. I feel for them.
My wife is a neo-natal intensive care nurse. She cares for premature babies and if one does not make it, she talkes to the parents etc. It takes a special person to do what your wife and mine do.
Hopefully I will be up at Drum next weekend buying him a steak dinner or two and several cold ones.

OMG Roy,
I can't comprehend what your wife must go through. I can't stand to see little ones suffer.
My wife is a SFC in the CT Army National Guard AGR which is basically active duty Army assigned to CT. This is her first CNT visit and she is a wreck.
I told her to stand strong in front of his family and that there will be plenty of hugs for her when she gets home.
Duece
Tell her that she will probably come home and cry. My wife has a nurse for 12 years and still comes home and cries.
My prayers will be for your wife and the fallen warrior's family.
Roy
Well bless you all,if i coulda went i would have.
Can't figure out how 80% of my country became a bunch of commie, tree huggin, muslim ***** kissers overnight
First thing they done here after 911 is put up concrete barriers around the mosques.Guess all these fanatical catholic suicide bombers we have over here!

Congrats RG!!! Tell your son that we sincerely appreciate the sacrifices he and all the others have made so that we can wake up free every morning!
thanks
I will be flying up to see my son next weekend. He will not get leave to come home until sometime in the middle of July.
Unfortuanately my wife will not be able to make the trip. Her mother (who lives with us), had a stroke a couple of weeks ago and we don't feel comfortable leaving her alone over the weekend.
I have also been invited to a BBQ with his buddies family. So I will be able to see what Northern Q is all about.
Thanks again for all the support to him and the troops. I will tell him face to face about all your well wishes.
