I read a tip about running my homemade rub through one for those cheap coffee grinders, to make all the ingredients a consistent size. So I went and bought one yesterday. My question is; how long do you run the rub through the grinder? Just a few seconds? Or longer?

What would probably be easier is take the items that are not the same size and grind them individually as oppose to doing the whole rub. You know your bases like paprika and sugar, will be about the same so no need to waste your time grinding those.
I normally use garlic and onion powder as opposed to granualted so that it already is the same size and my base. Peppers are normally what I have to grind and I just throw them in till they are the size I want.

I don't have a good anser, but my experience with spices in a coffe grinder are:
1. use pulses instead of letting it go
2. wait 30 seconds before taking off the lid of the grinder (your lungs and eyes will thank you).
good luck.

If you ever get a recipe calling for ground up Bay Leaves..put them in with the black peppercorns. Them peppercorns hammer those leaves good. If you try to run it with just the leaves that blade will chase it around all day. Also after you start running spices through there dont get any brilliant idears about using it for grinding something else. It will make your French Roast taste like cumin:)

Real simple answer, Just get Bill's rub & call it good. Hell that's what I do. That's just me.

Thought I would report back. I used the coffee grinder and ground my rub into a fine powder. I put it on some ribs I was making and I loved it! The powder clung to the meat much better than before. Also sometimes (usually when I make ribs) there would be a grainy texture from the rub on the ribs and I was not very happy with that. It did not happen every time but it happened enough to bother me. But when I ground the rub there was no grit just flavor. This is how I will be doing my rub from now on!

My wifey boughted a "Magic Bullet" system.
Well, I mixed up a little rub cause I was out of Bill's and tossed it in the small jar with the flat blade and crunched it real good. It smoothed all the mountains of hard brown sugar and made a smooth mixture in seconds. I just poured it on the ribs afterward, but ye ole magic bullet has a shaker top for the jars that will be perfect to use next time.

I'm with you on that, ddog. I like a finer rub for my ribs, too, except that I still like my black pepper somewhat coarse. I like biting into the little chunk of peppercorn.

TL,
That's how Tee likes her rub, lite & powdery. I use a flour shifter to apply rub on her spares. Works good to :D

My wife brought home a huge bottle of very coarse black pepper - somewhere betweeen cracked and coarse. It's really large flakes of peppercorn. I love the stuff. She got it at Williamson Brothers BBQ in Atlanta.

I put whole peppercorns in the chopper attachment for my stick blender and whiz 'em around in there until I get what I like. I like the versatility.
From the sound of it, I usually go with something like what you described. Any bigger, and it doesn't really stick. Any smaller, and it doesn't really "bite."
