Since we can't get pecan wood up north, I found a place that will ship me some pecan shells. What I need to know is.....how do you cook with pecan shells? Do you soak 'em? How much do you use? How long do they last?

"Anyone....Bueller??"

Smoke,
My dad has used pecan shells for years and i use em when i get pecans from him. How we do it is soak em and keep em by the smoker and every hour or so toss a handfull or two on yer coals. My dad never buys woodchips cause he always has pecan shells on hand. As for how long they last i m not sure just toss some on when you aint got no more smoke.

SD, never had the need ta soak pecan shells since I can get all the pecan wood I'll ever need here in the south! What I can't get here is apple,so here's my deal. Next time I drive up to visit my close friends in Livonia, Garden City, and "Wasteland" I'll deliver a whole pickup load of pecan to ya in exchange for a whole pickup load of apple ta bring back! Deal? After all, you'll only be just down the road!

Hey Michelob, I am kinda in the same boat that you are in. I have access to all of the pecan wood that I need since my neighborhood used to be a pecan orchard @ 1 time. I never really tried to use pecan shells to smoke with before. & to think, last year,I had all of the pecan shells that ever needed. This year is gonna be different. I am gonna try something new.Oh yeah, I am looking for apple wood too. I mean logs instead of chips or chunks.

Yeah, me too, Paul. Not interested in chips, but could use some chunks or logs to cut into chunks. Wonder what freight would cost ta get a few logs of apple shipped here?

Well I be on Grillmasters side totally on this deal. The best flavor from Peecan comes from the shells. I also dont soak em..just chunk a double handful on the coals about once an hour or so. Very good stuff. Try using some in the smoke house mode too as opposed to whutever you been using. Slow smoked sausage take on a whole new dimension. It make you slap somebodies mama. Burning Peecan wood got about as much flavor as a cardboard box..lessen in come from Jouston. Got a hold of some down there one time that smelled real good..but most of us aint from Jouston most likley. Now dont forget to shell em or you have some little mini-explosions in there when they pop. I think the best place to buy em should be a garden center type place where they are sold as mulch now this be unless they all moldy or something. Since I got several Peecan trees in the backyard I can normally keep the wareden busy cracking the things all winter so I dont have to buy none. Your and your Daddy are very smart fellers. .

Hey Grillmaster!

I just noticed you're from El Paso. Pretty place; real nice folks! I have to stop there whenever I come back from Hermisillo to clear customs...
