Who's had them? What's the best way to fix them? Got one from a friend at work - never seen one before (let alone heard of them). I'm willing to try it though...

TIA

It's what made him cough, at least.

is THAT what it is? A mushroom???...

I say stuff it. I posted a recipe for stuffed mushroom earlier...Here it is...So if you like garlic, then just try to lessen this recipe and everyone will want you to make them all the time.

4 (10 oz.) packages white mushrooms
1 full head of garlic
1 head of shallot
2 lemons
1 tsp. ground pepper
1 tsp. oregano
1 lb. butter
bread crumbs
1/2 cup grated romano cheese
garlic powder
cast iron skillet

Stuffing: Leave the butter out to soften. Wash mushrooms, snap stems off gently & set aside caps. Mince 3/4 of stems & all the shallot, also mince the large garlic cloves (save small pieces). Mix minced items, oregano, pepper, cheese, with 2 sticks of butter into a mixture for stuffing the caps. Place mixture into the refrigerator to thicken. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Slice & sautee retained garlic in a stick of butter & juice of 1/3 lemon. When brown, scoop garlic out. Saute EACH SIDE of cap for about 8 minutes, and sprinkle each side with garlic powder & lemon as they are in for the sautee, adding butter if needed. Drain caps & set aside. Repeat until all caps are sauteed.
Stuff the mushoom caps by hand, mounding mix into the cap opening. Set them tightly touching on a pan. When pan is full, sprinkle all mushrooms with garlic then bread crumbs to form a good layer on top of the caps. Bake uncovered for 12-15 minutes. Serve sprinkled with a little lemon juice and enjoy.

NHSmoker,

Don't forget that you had to pluck them from the horse/cow pastures, as well! :P

ok- I thought that you were talking about the puff ball mushroom-- they do grow in the woods in New York State and when we were kids we would stomp on them and the spores come floating up - it looks like smoke. And I guess thats where the name comes from.I am a mushroom lover- But I don't think I would want to eat one.

Alright, I tried them. I sauteed them with a little spice - pretty strong flavor and kind of has a bitter aftertaste. It was free and worth a try - I wouldn't pay for them though...
