Well, I just had a nice big brain fart. I just returned home and took the opportunity to do a quick clean on my pit before it started raining again. It was fairly dry, but I wanted to heat it up just to dry things out, since I cooked in the rain yeterday afternoon. So, I fired up the gas assist and had the main chamber door open, while talking to someone. I didn't notice that the flame had gone out. When I did, I made sure that main chamber door was open and left the fire box door open for a few seconds. Obviously, not long enough however. Being the genious that I am, I decided that before I turned the gas assist back on, I would throw a match in the firebox, to see if there was left over gas. Bad idea.
I now have a right arm that is missing most of the hair, some singed eye lashes, brows, sideburns, and bangs. Luckily, I was wearing a red sox hat, or it could have been worse. Needless to say, I am lucky that it wosen't worse.
So, I know I've read cautionary tales like this before, but thought I should share, so that everyone remembers to be careful. The craziest thing is that, all the times that I was three sheets to the wind and managed to light that thing without a problem. Now, sober as a judge, I gave myself a good scare.

Yeah, I've heard of folks getting really hurt with gas grills. Guess gas assist pits aren't any different.

:) Butchers get cut & bakers get burnt – Pit Bosses get lit up
3 years ago cooking for Biker Sunday - I borrowed a pit that had gas assist - it was crude set up & yep……..FRED blew it up  & spent the day at the hospital getting a shot of morphine  - while the guy I called at the last min was cooking briskets for 1,000 bikers
It’s a running joke to a lot of people & part of my folklore– Fred & fire don’t mix
I keep a large bottle of Aloe Vera in the frig & in a cooler at every cook I go to & always have burn & other safety items with me on location

OUCH...I was a firefighter and I got a burn on one job many years ago. Hurt like hell for weeks.
Glad to hear you're OK.
By the way, do we all keep an extinguisher nearby? Should be Dry-Chem and we should know how to use it.

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DEALING WITH GAS OF ANY KIND. IT IS EASY TO GET CARELESS WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THE SAME THING A HUNDREDS TIMES. I KNOW THIS ALL TOO WELL AND COULD KICK MYSELF IN THE BUTT EVERYTIME CAUSE I DAMN SURE KNOW BETTER. I AM GLAD YOU ARE OKAY.

I'm glad to hear that you're alright. We are all lucky to have as many limbs as we still do.

I guess you don't know as many judges as I do. :D

Tex,
i was trying to think of a better metaphor, because I've heard of the sipping judge, but couldn't pull one together.
Thanks for all the well wishes. Just remember to be safe, or at least drink more beers so that you don't jump as much.
NHSmoker,
Glad you didn't end up resembling some briskets I've seen. The important thing is that your skin wasen't burnt. The singed hair will eventually come back, so all in all you came out of it with a relatively painless learning experience! :)

Glad you're relatively OK. We need to be reminded now and again, so I'm grateful that another Q brother was thoughtful enough to share an embarassing moment to keep the rest of us on our toes. Hope the hair grows back quickly.

Yeah, "sober as a nun" doesn't work, either. I also know too many of those. :D

Glad you're not hurt too bad, NHSmoker. :) Thanks for the reminder we all need to pay attention when playin with fire!

I gotta speak again on this...I was a Captain in the Fire Department and I know what it's like to be burned. I also made my guys view a training film about burns and the associated treatments afterwards...including the chemical washings and skin scrapings and skin graftings, stretching, etc.
It is NOT fun and should not be taken lightly. I feel that none of this group does take it lightly, but I'd just like to gently nudge us all to be alert, safe, and responsible. My biggest battle cry with my guys back then was "use your head" when it comes to fire and firefighting.
I ain't gonna preach no more. Thank you.

Familiarity breads contempt – I worked as a ‘skimmer’ at a copper refinery & have been blister or spot charred burned 100’s of times – a few severely – I got so used to being ‘up on the fire’ & nonchalant about being burned = I sometimes got careless & got burnt for no reason other than my stupidity /
One of my criteria for giving my self a ‘good cook’ pat on the back / is how safe I was /
I repeat – ALWAYS HAVE SAFTEY ITEMS ON SITE
