Hey guys,
Just wondering what you guy's favorite steak rub for the grill?

I am trying to find a good steak rub that is agreeable to my family's tastes, one that doesn't have too much heat. I realize that I am going to have to taylor something to suit us but I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on basic ingredients.

All the rubs I am seeing seem to revolve around salt, garlic powder, pepper, onion powder......

What are some of your OTHER ingredients that add flavor and not heat?

Cooincidentally, I did try the Texas Grilling Rub and sorry guys, it just had too much heat for us.

But, we really like the TexasBBQRub. It doesn't seem to have as much heat as the grilling rub. I WILL be getting some more of that stuff!!

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks,
ZBQ

Not a rub, but Dale's Steak Sauce is good. Don't need to marinate more than 30 minutes.

Did you try the Grilling Magic or Steak Seasoning? My 20 month old and 4 year old split a steak tonight that had Steak Seasoning on it and loved it!

Hi Carrie!
It was the Grilling Magic. Does the steak seasoning have less heat? I would be willing to try some of it the heat is less.

Also, I just had this thought, can you use the TexasBBQRub for a steak rub for grilling or will the sugars in it burn at grilling temps?

Thanks,
ZBQ

Try Obie Cues Steak Maker sometime. It seems to be our favorite.

Marinade in 1/2 soy, 1/2 worchester for awhile.

Put montreal steak seasoning on both sides just before flaming.

I like steak grilled med rare with a little salt and pepper, that's all. Don't want to cover up the taste of the steak.

I 'gotta agree with Stevo-O on the Montreal seasoning. Goes pretty good with just about anything.

Bills rubs are good as well. I got one at q-fest that was a bit on the warmer side for the wife but I like it.

When using steak & grilling magic are you "rubbing" it on, or sprinkling it on? It should be sprinkled on, use less, not as hot/spicey then.

Montreal steak seasoning :?:
VILE PICKLING SALT :!:

TXBBQ rub steak seasoning is the only one, will never use another, again just like the original TXBBQ rub is "pork",the steak seasoning is" beef".
Does that make sense?

I second that (along with James's suggestion). Kosher salt, freshly and coarsley ground black pepper, and a very light tough of good garlic powder, and you are well on your way.

Any steak that you have to "doctor up" with a bunch of seasonings might just as well be cut up into chunks and make chili out of it. A good Canadian steak needs nuthin but your love and attention while on the grill and then just a little salt and pepper. Should be the same with any "good" American steak wouldn't ya think?

I agree with the other posts that say that S&P and Garlic is the basic on steak. For all the other fancy stuff that we dream up and cook (except Brussel Sprouts), some things should be kept simple. Steak is one.

I sometimes make a prime rib with some Kansas City style rub on it. That tastes good...

I bought some of the Magic. I grilled some chicken a while back and my wife didn't like it as much as the seasoning we get from Cooper's bbq in Llano. Last week, I cut a pork loin into chops and used the Magic on them with some teriaki and they got scarfed up right away. I want to get some of the steak seasoning from Bill and see if my wife likes it.

Ahh now that Free Quebecker pecking must indeed be a conversational stater whilst hovering over a pint in Ottawa eh? You know them folks at the checkpoint took my uncles favorite .32 Colt pocket pistolo away from him when he trying to come into your country one time. He never did get it back. Now sure whut yall expect us tourista Texans to do over there if a Polar Bear comes looking for trouble or whutever. That would just makes me feel nekked to walk around like that. That pistolo be worth mucho dinero these days. Could you see if you could get it back to his next of kin maybe? Wee Wee? Thanks. That be my Uncle Jeff if that help you get started on the paper trail.

I did some tri tips on my old smoker at a work party that vanished in five minutes they were so good. I rubbed them with L&P Worchester Sauce dusted them with TBBQ Grilling Magic and roled them in Montreal Seasoning. I could not slice it fast enough people swarmmed by the cutting board risking fingers to get fresh slices.

Tailwagger, check this out:

That information is a bit outdated, though, as tri-tip has become quite popular on the coasts and, as a result, has increased substantially in price.

Tri tip is a cut slowly moving eastward from California. I love to cook 'em med rare and slice thin (London Broil style). Ask your butcher about them and if he asks "steaks or roast", just say roast. They're easy to do on the grill (indirect) or smoker.

One of the ingredience of Magic is cinnamon, which isn't very good on chicken, but it is good on pork. For this reason, we're going to develop a Magic that doesn't include cinnemon. BTW, the steak seasonin doesn't include cinnemon.

Exactly. No heat problem for me. I just sprinkle a bit on both sides and slap on the grill. Taste great.
