Last night while wrapped up in a dozen blankets and slurping gatorade, there was an ad that came on the TV that advertised "Slow Smoked BBQ" at home "just like the pros". They showed a horizontally split crock pot that was black and looked like a small smoking rig. They kept panning to shots of "fall off the bone ribs" and "juicy moist brisket", sort of all the buzz words we see around here.

Has anyone had any experience using the CrockPot BBQ cooker?

Is this a new product?

NOTE:
I'm not considering one but was a bit curious as to the origin of the product and any history anyone might have had with it.

I saw the ad the other night as well and think that it is probably just another crock pot that has recipes that include liquid smoke etc and sauces to get a bbq flavor. Maybe better than boiling but I am a skeptic.

Maybe I will be wrong.

I saw it a while back, and it just struck me as some sort of braising thing.

Yep, that's the one I saw the other night...

From what I can tell, it cooks stuff up on a rack not sittin' in the liquid like a regular crock pot.

So it probably works ok, but you won't get any smoke flavor. Except maybe with liquid smoke like you said earlier, but that just plain sucks...

You hang around it while it's cooking you'll probably end up doing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen  . I guess you could put it out on the deck or something though. If you have a power inverter, you could cook while driving down the road, but that's a whole other thread  .

Now I like that inverter idea! Reckon there is any Po-leese out there who could be bribed with a pulled pork sammich if they were to pull you over? :D :?:

Maybe we can get Ritch to add a verticle smoker, a firebox, a couple burners to it and set it on a trailer.

Funny thing on TV last night. We have a local newperson who puts on a "does it work wednesday's" segement. Last night she did the "Rival BBQ Crock Pot".

She put on a couple chickens and a store marinated pork loin. Let it go a few hours on high and had the newscrew give it a thumbs up or thumbs down with comments.

All gave it a thumbs up for being 'moist'. A couple people (by their facial expressions) gave the impression there was no smoke flavor. Finally, a shot showed all the juice and drippings captured in a pan on the bottom of the unit.

Overall rating by the newscaster was "Thumbs Up".

Hmmmmmm....... and about $80-100 bucks.

It probably works well. To be honest I have made a crock pot version of pulled pork and it was very good. It was not bbq and didn't have a smoky flavor but with bbq sauce it tasted good and everyone liked it.
I made sure people knew that it was made in a crock pot and not my infamous bbq pulled pork but they all knew that already cause nobody could find the bark. :)

I saw the commercial for that unit the other day.
It looks like it'd work...might even be alright if you have some meat all ready to Q and the weather takes a dump on you.
Then again if that was the case and you're having a hankerin' for some good Q, it'd probably be more of a disappointment.

Its just a big Crock lol but we have used in to do chicken
Went to the movies and it was done when we got home
Very good .Truth is most folks would think Q from the thing
was "SO GOOD Just fallin off the bone"
When did fallin off the bone become the measure of Q?
NOT

I purchased and used it and it is terrific. The ribs were smoked and crusty and moist at the same time. The house smelled wonderful. You smoke them using wood chips in a aluminum packet with slits on the top. Just like I do on the grill. The roast we made was wonderful. It was easy to use and much like a crockpot you can set it and forget it. until about the last 30 minutes if you want to add BBQ sauce that is when you apply. We like it and it is NOT a crockpot......just made by the same company

Thanks for that review, Flo. It's good to hear from someone who's actually used one.

I have to say, though, it still sounds a little dicey to me. :D

Not a Crock Pot more like a Roaster
Warden pointed out that a Crock Pot hold moisture
While this allows it to escape more like an oven
We are going to try Italian Beef Chicago Style in it
