Hey Chris-
Great looking yard bird there.
Question for 'ya.... Looks like you've got one of those pop-up thermometers in the breast. Did that come with the bird or did you buy them and insert? If you bought them, do they come in differing temps?

Hmmmmm...... They don't come with my birds. Sanderson Farms whole chickens. Sure seems like it would make cooking them easier. Wonder if you can purchase them outright?

On a serious note, yes you can buy them. They come by the bag full and I've seen them everywhere from Home Depot to Wally world. Now Alton Brown doesn't like them, says they are set for a temp that is too high and dries the bird out. Better to use the old therm method.
On a side note, I think you need to heat the Elves up a bit to make them....you get the idea

Are you nuknfutz? My elves stay warmed up, it's cold here in the far north and they need to help me with all sorts of daily activities.. ...If they got much warmer they'd melt like a crayola on the backdash of a car in Presidio, with the windows rolled up in August.
You can buy them for most any temp. Do a google search. I found them once before, but don't have the link. I bought a cheap turkey a few years ago that had one set at 170. When my Polder hit 170, the thing popped, right on the mark.

Chris1237 - That bird looks delicious, how did you get it to come out so moist on the outside, do you spray it during cooking w/ apple juice? Mine always seem to dry out on the outside. What temp and how long did you cook it because it looks wonderful!!!

That looks like some good stuff, there, Chris!
As for me, I don't know that I want to mess with those popper things. I'd rather not be in the pit to see them pop.

The gator is treating me well. I cook so great. I nice adding a log every 45 min. A few weeks ago I fired up the pit for some sausage I went 1 hour 20min without adding a log. I could have gone loger but by then my fire would have died. The gas is great I hated having to use charcoal to start my fire. Only thing i wish i would have done is add a rap around shelf. What I am going to do is have gator make me one and ship it up and Ill take it to a local welding shop and have them mount it on.

It came with the bird I used the meat thermomter I got here to tell the temp. of the bird I do not trust those pop up things.

I sprayed the out side with apple juice and cider viniger. I would not have done this If I did not have the pit open to mist the ribs. I ran the pit around 225-240. I also cook the the breast meat to 160 and then put it on the gasser and brougt it to 165.
