for $.67 lb. with $10 purchase limit 2. Not graded nor do they have any tradename. That is the 2 stores I stopped at. They did look good though. Nice and thick across the flat, nice flexibility & nice white fat. Got 2 to stick on the pit in the morning just to see how they cook.
Also Foodtown had some that were from a packer in California. They also had some from a packer named Kanes without a grade stamp. I have seen the Kanes before. Has anyone seen these before, or have any comments about them.

Kanes used to kill allot of cows. I am not sure of what their main kill is now. Probably mostly southern selects. :)

I thought that all beef was required by the USDA to be labeled select, choice, prime, etc.. I have never heard of Kane brisket. In my area we get mostly Excel, and IBP brand. I was wondering if anyone has noticed a difference in quality between these two brands? I have noticed over the years that IBP seems to have a consistantly better brisket than Excel.
I believe Sam Kanes is in Corpus Christi. They slaughter allot of light weight hefiers and some cows. I would bet that either those briskets were under 10 lbs. or if they were heavier they were from cows. Not all beef is graded and beef from south Texas with the brahman influence is USDA Select at best, some does not grade that good. If I had a good product, ie., choice or select USDA graded beef, I would sure apply that to the package and the price. No grade is just that, and the price reflects the quality.

I checked out the local Fiesta as well. All over 12# and very thick yellow fat cap. I wouldn't touch them even at 97 cents a pound!

Yep, Kanes is in CC. I lived there back in the early 90s when Kanes had a big fire. Talk about a large bbq.

Unless it is traveling over state lines I don't think it will (necessarily) get a USDA grading. Local butcher shops here sell non-graded (or is ungraded the correct name?) local beef.
Also, there are some local grocery stores that sell cuts of beef that didn't (or couldn't) meet the guidelines for the USDA.

.67 ...Up here that's a steal for chicken these days. ALtho I got chicken legs a month ago for .39 /lb. So I stocked up some. But brisket doesn't exist up here in the Supermarkets. It's gotta be a special order.
