I scrarfed this from a post on another forum. It appears to be old because Smitty's is still called Kreuz's, but it is a great read. Many of you guys prolly know of these places. Woody

thanks for the info. I read just about 5-6 reviews, but they all sound like they're worth visiting. Road trip Kathy...

I read through some of that, well only about the salt lick.

I had heard that the Saltlick was supposed to be a really good place, so last time I was in Austin we tried it. Maybe they were just having a bad day, but I didn't think it was as great as I had heard. The brisket wasn't tender, the ribs were just not right, I can't remember exactly why I wasn't happy, but my whole family agreed with me.

Anyhoo, I need to try some of the others tho. When I get my license maybe I should go on a search for the best Q in Texas. Might be a fun thing to do for Thanksgiving.

Well believe it or not I've eaten at everyone of those joints. I go to House Park the most because it's downtown and when I go to Austin I'm always in the area.

It's an old article and Kreuz's was still in the old location. The family hadn't split yet. Father left the business to son and building to daughter. Daughter decided she wanted a bigger part of the business and brother said forget it. Brother built a new Kreuz's just down the road. Sister brought in her son and opened Smitty's in her building.

Huge gaff. They left off Taylor Cafe. Vencil Mares is the most famous of the central Texas Pit Bosses. His joint is where the locals go.

Sounds like a great family decision. Open two stores with a story behind it and now you have two successful markets. Smart dad!

Good read Woodman. I have also heard from other people that the Salt Lick aint what it once was. So I think the young Buck might be right.

Salt Lick is just too sucessful. Wait times in the dead of winter on weekends can be over an hour. I stopped by on the way back from San Marcos on a Monday night last January and had a 20 minute wait by myself.

They're pulling brisket before its done or hasn't had time to rest. The place is a zoo.

Still have that wonderful Mustard Vinegar BBQ sauce. Cold Slaw is lthe best I've ever had. Not sure about outside the state, but in Texas, Whole Foods sells their sauce in its stores.

They've expanded to Vegas. The Red Rock Resort Casino
