i was given a weber digital thermometer that i used for the first time this past week-end. as most of us are prone to do, i threw away the instructions before i should have. the highest temp setting i could get for beef was only 170* which obviously don't work when you're shooting for 190* - 195*. tried pushing the set/select buttons numerous times, but never could set it past the 170*/well done setting. is that as high as this thing is good for :?:

go to the webpage and download the manual. I am sure it goes higher than that

What did Weber have in mind when they made those meat thermometers, cooking Hot Dogs?

Yes Santa, Hot Dogs and Puppy Peters!

I hate when the probe thermometers try and force you to use their temps for meat. Anyone who likes their meat anything close to rare has absolutely no use for any of the preset recommendations. Anybody found a probe thermometer that doesn't have all the presets and just lets you set it for the temp you'd like? Or better still, one that lets you reprogram the individual meat presets (e.g. rare beef = 125 instead of 140, pork = 137 instead of 160, etc.)?

Check out the Maverick ET-73...I bought one here...http://www.thegadgetsource.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=tgs&Product_Code=011502013733

Works great. Two probes. The smoker probe can be set with lo and hi temps with alarms. Hi range is 140-410 (with default at 176). Lo range is 30-176 (with default at 50). The food probe has a range of 32-393 (with default at 176).

yeah, the et-73 will soon be on its way. there were only two "control" buttons to push, so even for someone as mechanically challenged as i am, i was pretty sure i wasn't going to get it past their pre-set high temperatures. just wanted to run it by you guys to make sure i wasn't missing anything. thanks for the responses.

So if I'm reading that right, I can't set the alarm to go off when my prime rib hits 125? Or when my pit temp drops below 200? I don't think that's the thermometer I'm looking for...

Try this one. I have it and you can set for high temp alarm, and I think low also.

Maverick works fine for both of those Rory...

I just bought a Redi Check by Maverick which allows you to use the preset temps or once you have selected a preset temp you can adjust it up or down for your own personal preference.

It was $38 at bed bath and beyond.

That Redi-Check ...is that wireless? I would like to experiment with a wireless. It seems like the Maverick ET-73 is the most often spoken of therm.

Rory, those temps you mentioned are for the smoker, not the food. Yes David, it is wireless.

Bed bath and beyond? Don't you have to be female to go into one of those stores?
Seriously...sounds like an excellent price on one of those.

Yes, it is wireless. It only has one probe though not two like the ET-73.

I have 2 Mavericks and they work flawlessly. The dual probes and the ability to set alarms is even cooler if you want to grab a nap or throw some horseshoes or something.

The Redi check with two probe is a good one. Have mine for about two years -- still works fine

Hmmm...

Folks, the Redi-Chek IS the ET-73. It has 2 probes. It is made by Maverick Industries. It sells for $39 online at the Gadget Source. It is available other places as well.

What you don't want is the ET-72, which has one probe.

I have one of these. You can set both a meet temp and a cooker temp both hi/lo. They are also great for long overnight cooks.

Are there any out there with multiple probes and 1 head unit?? Building new pit, might could go all digital--would need 4 probes.

I have a Nu-Temp with a central unit that listens to three remote units. I have to say that it's not the most user friendly deal out there, but I like it quite a bit.

I got my weber for christma and I think the probe has gone bad already. Last time I cooked something it started at 120 and went up from there. I put it in the freezer and it read 0. Now this makes me think something is screwy in the "brain" of the thing because it appears to be choosing wether it is reading C or F. Does any one have one that has done the same thing?

Iowa, you're probe could be fried, alright. Did it ever wind up in or over some pretty rough heat? I've also heard people talking about problems after their wire got pinched, but I've never seen that with my stuff.
