For storebought, I've found no equal to Texas BBQ Rub.
For homemade, well, that's really a matter of taste. Sometimes, it's just S&P+garlic powder. Sometimes, it gets fancier. What do you like there?

Bill's rub # 1 is great on pork ribs, that and TPJ Pineapple Habanero glaze combination would be hard to beat. Except maybe for your favorite TPJ jelly combo.

Homemade? It's your home so you come up with what YOU like. A good starter is equal amounts of salt, pepper and a spice. Go from there with sugar or brown sugar, cayanne etc.
Storebought? Texas BBQ Rub. Great flavor right out of the bag or applied to the meat. Good bark quality too.
Can't go wrong with TexasBBQ Rub. I don't care for sauce except on the side for dipping. Like them ribs with just rub.

I agree about the rub from TexasBBQRub...real good stuff. Look up the thread about all the different uses for the rub...there's bound to be something in there for you or anyone.

Until your order from Bill gets there (and you really should try it), Wild Willy's rub from Smoke and Spice will get you by:
3/4 cup paprika
1/4 cup ground black pepper
1/4 cup salt
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons garlic powder
2 tablespoons onion powder
2 teaspoons cayenne
