Still learning the hard way by trail and error. What's the best way to start lump charcoal? I have been using 2-3 of Webers cubes to light. I hear everybody talkig about chimney starters but cant find one large enough to hold lunp. I also read something about "sheets" to start a fire. Any suggestions would help so I can be like the big boy's.

You could get a few chimney starters. You also might want to look into weedburner. Before I had my log lighter I would put a chimney full of charcoal over a turkey frier and that would get it started quick.

BBQDoug taught me the best trick ... fill your chimney with lump or charcoal and place over a lit sterno can. After about 5 minutes you can remove sterno can and cap for future use. No mess and you can get a lot of lights from one can.

Thanks Doug.

Wow, never thought of the sterno can thing. I'll have to give that a shot. Does it get the coals going any quicker?

Newspaper works well for me in a chimney starter, but sterno would be easier and no ash from the newspaper blowing around.

Academy has the larger chimneys for about 13 bucks. Just bought one last week. Walmart has the smaller ones available also.

Use my drier-lint starter pellets. They make Weber's cubes look woosey.
See thread on Chit-Chat.
I recommend the Weber chimney and I use starter cubes of some kind whether I make them or not. I just can't get the newspaper thing down.

Making your own pellets is easy: melt parafin (grocery store in canning seciton) in a ziplock freezer bag in boiling water and add enough drier lint to absorb all the liquid wax. Cool and slice with a serrated knife. Cheap, easy and not messy. What'cha goina do with all that drier lint anyway?

I use charcoal chimmey and weed burner with newspaper in the bottom of the charcoal chimmey. Light the newspaper and just hold the nozzle of the weedburner down. Hours and hours of entertainment. Plus the sheer face of fear on your neighbors while holding a bottle of whiskey and playing with fire really makes for a great night.

I use a Weber Chimney and my side burner to lite the lump charcoal or briquettes. I figured this out one morning in the darkness of the pre-dawn morning. It works very well for me.

Here are some pitures
