Not sure if this is normal or not.
But this weekend I picked up some baby-back ribs that were shrink-wrapped/air sealed @ my Local Wal-Mart.
When I cut the seal off from the package and pulled out the ribs it smelled sick. Kind of like a dead mans fart. Anyways I did not cook them and decided to just throw them away and wrap them up in about 3 trash bags so the smell would not be so bad in our outside trash can. Not sure if that smell is normal, but I almost threw-up!! Well that spoiled my Sunday night BBQ :(
So never buy ribs @ Wal-Fart

That just pisses me off when that happens.
Sadly it happens all to often. They sold you a bag of funk disguised as ribs!
Take the package back with the label and or receipt. Tell them they sold ya some funky meat and they should simply refund your money.
If they want ot be *****holes then open the package funk and all and have them take a whiff. If that doesn't work carry the open bag throught the store back to the meat department when they are really busy and explain the same LOUDLY to the meat manager.
Betcha' don't have to go that far. FUNK is bad for sales!

I hate going to wal mart to get meats. The people who work there dont know anything about the meats. I get questions like baby back ribs does that mean beef ribs. No dumb asses baby back ribs only come from a pig. Also alot of their meats are injected with a salt soution. That is why i do not get my meats from walmart. Sams may be different I dont know.

My sister works at Walmart. No one knows anything about the meat there because it is all pre-packaged, frozen and shipped to each store. Their meat is the worst. Oddly though, Sam's club has excellent meat. Both companies owned by the same family with much different meats.

You just might of been smelling the old blood from being bagged sucked. When the meat comes outta them cryovac bags they smell pretty funky, wash with cold water and the smell dissapears.
First time that happened to me was when I bought some ribs from a Sam's and that smell hit me when the bag was opened, I too thought that I'd been ripped off.
I'm not saying that is what was going on with your particular case, cause sometimes ya just never know, but I do know that being in those bags they will smell pretty wolfy when opened. But a good rinsing in cold water will usually clear the smell up...

I've had that smell, too, and it worried me. I'm pretty anal about keeping food properly, so it really upset me. However, like Santa said, I rinsed the meat with water (I think it was brisket, maybe), like I always do anyway, and it was fine.
Still, if you every have any doubts about bad meat, never hesitate to take it back. Any place that has any integrity will take it back.

Tried Walmart meat. The worst meat I ever bought anywhere! Don't know why Sams Club has some decent meats and Walmart is so bad. Costco is the best between Sams and Costco, in my mind.

All the Wally Worlds I've seen sell "enhanced" meats. Sometimes, that in itself, makes for some funky smellin' stuff. I avoid WW meat whenever possible.
However, Sam's on the other hand sells regular un-enhanced stuff and so far I haven't had any complaints.

I know if I opened a cryo pac of ribs and it smelled bad, never in a thousand years would I rinse it off and use it. I would take it back.period! I always smell the ribs I open and have never had any to smell bad. And I have opened a many a pac of them. (did I ever say how much I love ribs?) Course I have never bought any meat from Wally World.

Just about every one of them cryovacs I've ever opened had a smell to 'em no matter where they came from....even when working in the restaurants...but you do have to be careful....esp. since we never know for sure how the meats have been handled .... Before they were ever placed in the display cooler...how long were they setting out, stacked up out of the truck before someone checked the inventory and put them away? We all know that there are safety standards that are supposed to be in place and followed by stores and purveyors but the reality is another thing all together.....esp. now that it's summer.....don't take but a lil while out of refridgeration before them microbes start to multiply at exponitional (sp? = very, very fast) rates.... So everybody please take care with the way it's handled after we get hold of it.
No matter what it smells like when the bag is opened...

I checked out the meats at wally world up here and just what 1more said. They are enhanced meats. Only a couple other grocery storesa around, so I will be checking the local meat packers pretty quick. If I cant find a deal on meats, it's not that far to make monthly trips to Sam's and stock up the chest freezer.

Yep, more than chicken. They have a hog facility in Logansport In. I was just there at midnight delivering CO2. Am going to have to ask if they'll sell direct sometime.

Tyson ain't jus' chicken these days. They've really diversifed. They sell pork ribs under at least 2 labels. Tyson and IBP(or is that IPB - Sam's ribs). They've bought Wrights bacon and also sell bacon under their own name - not bad either. Also inta big chickens(aka turkeys) plus seafood - can't remember the brand(s). IIRC seems they also sell beef too.
