I do not know it anyone has interest, but I have had a hell of a time getting a digital thermo that will work. I have been using my digital mulitmeter, a feildpiece, that I use in my company, I am in the heating and air bidness. It has a type "K" connector that you can connect digital thermocouples to. This set up is very accurate and dependable.

I found a cool website that sells various themocouples http://www.thermoworks.com/products/probe/index.html that I can use with my set up.

Now here is where I thought you guys might have an interest. They now have a Thermopen that has a type "K" connection port http://www.thermoworks.com/products/thermapen/thermapen_3_7.html for only $79. You can then buy the thermocouple probes that you want. Not a real cheap solution, but I have spent about 5 X $39 on cheap polders and other various cheapo thermos in the last year. This gives a accurate lasting product that does hold up.

Brilliant!!!
You could have the thermopen working just like a polder, well not just like a polder, but "accurately" unlike a polder.

Thermopen came out with these right after I bought their standard model. I'm still very happy with what I have, but would have bought the newer style. I've thought about mounting several thermocouples throughout my pit and building a switching circuit so I can monitor any point at the touch of a button or have it cycle through the probes. Obviously I have way too much time on my hands  .

I've got a nu-temp with the 3 remotes, a maverick et-73 and 3 polder instant read thermos. All read very close to each other and are acurate when I tested to compare. I found the polders at a balck and decker store for $10 ea. Only complaint is I've had the head pop off on one and the wires broke but with a magnifying glass and a soldering iron it was back in business.
If you have the meter to hook a thermocoupler to it is a highly accurate way to check your temps.
I still mainly go by look and feel and use the thermos as a final check before pulling meat off to be served.

I was thinking the same thing when I ordered mine

BUT.....
The Thermapen with the switchable probes does not close all the way to turn off...it only goes perpendicular to the body. Therefore inorder to put the thing in your pocke tyou have to REMOVE THE PROBE.

Even worse, there is no way to keep the probe from pulling out from its mount, so if you stick it into a large undercooked chunck of meat and there is any resisitance when pulling out the probe comes out of the unit.

I returned it and ordered a standard style and love it but the new unit just isn't worth the hassle.

Also note that thdere is no covers for where the probe inserts. once any gunk gets in there it is DONE.

I tell ya"ll what, I bought one of those thermo pens & am really happy with it. I would hate to have to cook w/out it.

Thanks for that review, MKD. I like my Thermapen quite a bit, and it's a shame they make in iffy product like that one.
