...and if so how does this disease affect your barbecue cooking (and more specifically eating) ?
I was recently diagnosed and have since quit using any sugar based rubs or sauces.
Last brisket I did was coated with wooster sauce then heavily covered with pepper/paprika/salt type rub.
The meat came out pretty good ... but I sure miss the sugar.

Hey Oldnway. Alot of that has to depend on one's weight in a sence. Reason that I say that is that I used to be on oral (Avandia & Glyburide)diabetic meds until I had lost enough weight to get off of them. I still do however still put Splenda in my coffee & use it when making my iced tea in the pitcher. So far my sugar level level has been on the level. Just watch your starches & carbs as they do raise your sugar levels as well. I have gotten so used to the Splenda that I hardly ever use any sugar anymore. Matter of fact, I have asked Bill Cannon if her has ever experimented using Splenda in his rub mixture. I know that it would cost more to make & I would like to see how it would turn out. But other than that. I just go about doing things the same way the way that I did before.

I am type II, my readings vary depending on how good I have been.
I try to watch my intake but to tell you the truth I don't worry about it when it comes to rubs, ect.

my wife is insulin dependent and when she behaves and the blood sugar is good, I use Bills rub, maybe a little less then I used to but I use it. as stated splenda and other sweetners, are about 4 times the cost, do nt brown when cooking and some use a dfferent sweetness to weight ratio. splenda has a bag that is a mixture of splenda and sugar. also as long as your sugar is under control and your md agrees being diabetic means contolling your blood sugar if you use a sugar based rub, pass on the chocolate cake or eat smaller portions of each. remember, control and compromise. I suggest seeing a dietition and getting diabetic cookbooks, as well as joining the the American Diabeties Association. also check any other meds and their effect on blood sugar. hope this helps

I am not a diabetic, but I do not use any sugars in my bbq rub. I use it on all meats (pork, beef, chicken, etc.) Never have. I have some of Bills rub that I use sometimes, and it is very good, but it is the first I have ever used with sugar in it. Sometimes I baste , and it has a little brown sugar in it, but not always. Only sugar I normally get is in my sauce.
Other than sauce, I use no sugar at all. I use Splenda.

I was asking Bill the same... maybe a Sugar Free TXBBQRub.... I was going to try to make a rub with the Splenda Brown Sugar Sub. If I remember from the Diabetic Diet stand point.... Splenda is not allowed.... it still has sugar values. You might want to double check before using it too heavy.
You might want to try using a Sugar Free Jelly as a sweetening base for a ending glaze. I know it still has sugar values, but apple Smuckers Sugar Free is a good sweet one to try with sauces.

Try this stuff:
http://www.wheylow.com
Both sugar substitute and brown sugar substitute. You'll kick splenda to the curb after you try this.

The guy who invented that stuff is a chemist whose wife had diabetes. He developed for her.
Good stuff. Not cheap, but good.

I think I am going to order the 5# box of Whey Low Gold... a brown sugar substitute. Will put it to the test.
OH... when I made it home, I checked the Smucker's Sugar Free jelly.... it is made with Splenda, so that would be a WATCH IT for diabetics.

I am Type 2 also.I still use Bills Rub I just use less. Its a matter of watching the other bad food so you can cheat a little. If you watch your carbs you should be fine.

 You must also monitor your blood sugar 2 hours after you eat to see if the last meal drove your levels up. Chinese food can do a real number on your blood sugar levels.

I don't have diabetes, but a good friend has recently had a crisis intervention...hospitalized and toes removed...and STILL he eats and drinks some sugar stuff. What I want to ask is what happens if the last meal drove your sugar levels up, as 101 spoke of? What does it mean for health and reaction? What can you do afterwards, assuming the levels are up?

 It would let him know he needs to change how that last meal was made. Some foods have more sugar than you think. Bread and beer can do a real number on your blood sugar.

Diabetes can cause so many problems like nerve damage, heart trouble, vision loss, blood circulation trouble, loss of toes, feet. It is a very dangerous disease that can lead to so many health problems.
Carbs are bad for diabetics because once they enter the body they are converted to sugar and the pancreas does this. With diabetes the pancreas does not function right to begin with and it over produces insulin (in some cases) and the sugar readings goes wild.

My mother-in-law is diabetic and lives with my brother-in-law. He carefully manages her blood sugar and insulin. When they come over, he's careful of what she gets but he sees it as her only occasional time to splurge just a little. But I still modify stuff a little when they're coming over, make stuff just for them, and point out what there is.

I have also started using Sea Salt instead of regular table salt. It is supposed to help with the sodium levels. I love it.... have it in salt shaker and salt grinder.

Sea salt is good stuff. A little goes a long way. I have it in grinder form also. It is good on the skins of a baked tater!

Hey Ya"ll, Just remember that all of your carbs & starches will raise your sugar level to an extent also. So be extrmely careful on that too.

Very true on the starches, potatos, rice, corn are complex carbs and will raise your glucose level just like the simple carbs, stuff with sugar in it.
Berries are the best fruit for you to eat. Stay away from anything that is labeled "low fat." These people ought to be shot. When they take the fat out of something, they replace it with sugar which doesn't have "fat" in it. So, you think you are eating "healthy" and your blood sugars will go through the roof. Always look on the side of the box and see how many grams of carbs are listed per serving, and base your decision on that. Carbs are what affects your sugar.
Splenda will make your blood gucose level go up, but don't shy away from it. If you have a sweet tooth, it's your best friend. A tsp of regular sugar has 4.2 grams of carbs, Splenda has less then one gram per tsp.
The best way to monitor your blood glucose level is to learn to count carbs. BTW, back when I was in Nursing school, they taught us that anytime your glucose level is over 200 you are doing your body harm. I know that the ADA has since lowered that number, but I can't remember what it. is. Get yourself a glucometer, learn to count carbs, and you will do OK. BTW, Splenda in its liquid form doesn't have any carbs. That's why when you read the labels your diet drinks with Splenda in them will show 0 carbs.

I agree. Anything labeled low fat or diet you better watch out for. Caffiene free is the same way. Sure it has no caffiene but what are the chemicals doing to us that are used to remove the caffiene? I love diet coke, but no carbs, no calories and double the sodium and made with aspertain, sorry on the spelling. LOL look at this stuff and the side effects that may be with it.

Bandit,
Diet Rite has no sodium, caffiene and is made with Splenda. Maybe the best one out there "health wise."

Coke Zero uses aspertame. Pepsi One uses Splenda. some studies show aspertame to be harmful with some cancer fighting drugs. before deciding on what to use, get a list of any meds or treatments and ask your dr what to use. LOML is type 2 diabetic and has cancer and high blood pressure so cooking/shopping is an adventure in label reading and a balancing act. balance and common sense are what is needed most

I just bought me one of those Coke Zeros.
It ain't as bad as Diet Sam's Choice.
(ain't as good as the real thing either...but it'll have to do)

Before I started my diet this year... my drink of choice was Coke Zero and Crown. In any health situation, carbonated beverages are all bad, diet or not. I still treat myself to a diet drink once or twice a week (without the Crown). I have found that the Kroger Brand Diet Root Beer to be very good, and it satisfies my sugar cravings.
I was doing my weekly grocery shopping tonight... it takes me a long time, because I am a label reader. My wife lets me do the shopping on my own, because of my timely manor. A lady was just going on about how good this "Natural" peanut butter was and I should try it. I picked up a jar of Walmart Brand Crunchy.... compaired labels with her.... My Walmart brand.... less sugar, less sodium, less fat, less calories..... Hmmm I said, as I grabbed my weekly large jar of Wally World Peanut Butter Crunchy for half the price and made my way to fresh produce.

Txngent, I gotta ask you about your numbers in your sig line. Are you going to change the one based on every month?
Othwise, I feel out of control a lot of the times when it comes to weight gain/loss and food additives. There's so much info out there, so I just try to adjust the amount that I eat, even tho I still eat practically the same types of food as before.

Yes DB, I want to change my monthly report in my signature every month. I think it will keep me more focused. I also know that people like DUSTAWAY will give me a hard time if the numbers don't go down. I need that kind of support. I don't know if I mentioned it or not, but I once owned a cardio store and actually wrote diets for people. Being a part of a support group, no matter if it is in a Brotherhood of BBQ, or a weight watcher group it helps. I like the support of our brothers and sisters here, simply because we talk about way more than diet. We all strive for the best taste of food, and specially BBQ.
I think a low carb (not as low as Atkins), high protein diet is the way to go for more people than others. I also believe that exercise (although very important to health), needs to be limited to the extremely over weight. You will not loose muscle by not getting exercise. You loose muscle by not supplying your body enough protein it needs to maintain your present muscle structure. Your body will canabolize protein to get its amount needed to maintain. That is why runner's diet consist of high carbs.... fuel for endurance, and explains their lean muscle masses. On the other hand, body builders eat high protein less carbs. Carbs are needed for energy, but protein for large muscle masses.
My point is that if you are starting a diet and to date don't exercise everyday or three times a week, you need to start with like a walk once a week... or just start parking farther away from the store and taking stairs instead of elevators. The first month on a diet, you should focus more on eating habits and nutrition. Lots of people go in head first with a daily exercise plan, and by the end of the month are already starting to slip out of the goals.
All I have done this month is watch my portions.... I made my wife and I a diet plan.... I am on a 2400 Daily Caloric Intake and my wife is on 1500 DCI. We are on a 40%pro. 25%carb. 35%fat diet. Most of the fat comes from essential oils. Four meals a day.... 85% of the DCI needs to be consumed in the first 8 hours of your day. Eat most to all of your carbs. in those 8 hours so you can metabolize before going to bed.
Now, I apply this to REAL life.... we eat chicken, turkey, beef, and pork. I eat Nature's Own Double Fiber bread, Nature's Own Sugar Free Wheat Hamburger Buns, Nature's Own Whitewheat bread and buns. READ all labels... this will make you concious of what you are eating. Eat Brown Whole Grain rice. High fiber stuff is great for the diet.
Anyway, didn't want to get on a rant or soapbox, but maybe it will help someone that reads it. I told myself that I was only going to weigh once a month... best way, but already did a couple of times. After the first two weeks, I have dropped 13#s.... my goal is 10 a month avarage. The first month or two you will drop more if you are looking at more than 50# fat loss, so I am hoping it will continue. Next month, I am going to start a exercise regimn that will consist of 3 days a week cardio (mostly on my treadmill)... going to dust off my weight racks in the near future too.
DB you can do.... BBQinFL is doing it too! I am sure more are out there as well. You have all the support you will ever need with this BROTHERHOOD!

Wow, thanks for the help. I am very much overweight after being just somewhat overweight during my career. Thru thse years we had yearly physicals and my cholesterol was always good (max at 204), as well as my blood pressure (always 120/80). My hdl and ldl were not as good in their proportion, and I have conveniently forgotten the numbers. But within the last 3 years I have gained about 30 pounds. My weakness is sweets, also reward-eating, and bad-timed eating (like when I get home at midnight)
I would like to ultimately get to 200 to 225 and stay there. Maybe I'll PM you to talk this thru more.
Thanks
