Hi all
I will be making my first ever visit to Texas next weekend. I was hoping that someone could point me towards some good Texas BBQ in the Austin or San Antonio area. I'm really hoping to experience some of the local flavor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Dave

Using the trail, Lockhart's Kreuz or Smitty's has great brisket. Elgin's Southside Market has the best sausage in the world:D . Southwest of Austin in Driftwood is the original Saltlick Barbecue for some great ribs. Iron Works in downtown Austin has decent all around cue. Ben's Long Branch BBQ sometimes has mutton, which is awesome (also downtown).

Personally, Lockhart is a great stop because there's also Black's BBQ which has good brisket and good chicken, and if you like a "greasy" sausage, they got that too. The southern part of Lockhart has Chisholm Trail BBQ which carries beef ribs.

Those are all great suggestions. I'd also add Coopers to the list it is in the area http://www.coopersbbq.com/about.asp and last few times I've been great food.

If you are over near Huntsville,TX you've got to go to Mt. Zion it is a small church run bbq joint that is second to none IMO, but only open from around 10:30 or 11 until food is gone which is normally mid afternoon so a lunch only item.:)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to try as many of them as possible. I'm really looking forward to some Texas brisket(and sausage and ribs and chicken too).We don't see that so much in California and that seems to be what Texas BBQ is really known for. I can't wait. If you think of anywhere else let me know. I can eat 6 or 8 times a day if I have to to get it all in. Thanks again.:D
