My son gave me one of two 76 oz. bottles of Cattlemen's Original BBQ Sauce--source was Costco-- which I would like to doctor up a bit inasmuch as I don't really care for it as is. Anyone had any luck coming up a good general sauce using it as the base? Or should I just throw it out? Help will be appreciated.

Cattleman's ain't that bad as a commercial sauce but ya gotta decide what you like.
Ya got:
Sweet sugar, molasses, honey
Sour vinegar, lemon etc.
Salinity salt
Spice flavor can be anything
Heat Jalapeņo, cayenne, chipotle
Fruit flavors Apple, orange, peach, tomato etc.
Decide what it lacks in any category and add little bits until happy don't try for ecstasy in one try and don't add several things at once.
Have fun and keep notes you just might like it. :D

Droller, I used doctored up Cattleman's "Smokey" from Sam's Club for years as a catering sauce, always got compliments on it from the clients. What I added to the Cattleman's 76 oz. was a 12 oz. jar of unsulphered molasses and then an 18 oz bottle of your favorite commercial "spicey" bbq sauce. Quick and easy, no cooking, just shake and mix it all together real well. Lasts quite awhile under refridgeration too.
This is just one on many variations of ingredients you can add to make the sauce pleasing to your taste.

Think I may have already responded to this on another list but here goes again. Go back to Costco or Sams and get you a jug of Cattlemans Gold. Mix it 50-50 with the regular flavor and add enough cheap pancake syrup to make it sweet. Log Cabin..Mrs. Butterworths..Griffins etc. Makes a very good and unique sauce. Now when I make it I prefer a 60-40 match up in favor of the regular.

Add defatted brisket drippings and a splash of vinegar to as much sauce as your going to use that day. This mix has a very short life in the fridge but it's great.

I agree with Zilla. Brisket drippings are great in Cattlemen's sauce. That is what my Dad and I used in our market. But like what Zilla said, it has no shelf life. We made a new batch every day. We also used cider vineger for beef, and white vineger with some pepper sauce for yardbird. Nothing should be put on ribs but your fingers!

Thanks for the suggestions. I've made a note of them in my BBQ "cookbook" and will try them all.
