Hey guys,
It's been a while since I posted anything, but In my previous posts I introduced myself and said I was moving to Houston...Well it's starting to happen!
I'm driving down with the wife and daughter at the end of this week and dropping them off with her family then flying back to St. Louis till our house sells. I hope it sells quickly!
Anyway, I was thinking of trying out Goode Company while I am there. Is it any good? I've heard that it's usually solid, but not great.
I will be trying Williams Smokehouse once I get settled in down there, but Goode company is close to where my wifes dad works and will work out easier this time.
Thanks
Texana

Not my favorite, but very edible ... it's a favorite by a lot of folks ... you could do a lot worse ...
Stay away from Thelma's ..... and all is good.

I think you will like Goode Company, the Que is decent. What ever you do don't go to Drexlers.

You can check out a pretty good listing of restaurants in the Houston area at B4-U-Eat (http://www.b4-u-eat.com/). Just select "Bar-B-Que" as the Category. But take the reviews you read on that site with a grain of salt - both the pro and con reviews.
The thing about any kind of restaurant is that it's all up to a person's individual tastes.
There are restaurants like Treebeards (Cajun) or Pappasito's (Tex-Mex) that are extremely popular but I personally find their food bland and unremarkable. What they do which helps with their popularity though is consistency and big portions, plus the fact that their particular cooking resonates with a pretty good population.
Goode Company is more I guess "Texas cowboy" style as it's mesquite smoked. You can get it with or without sauce and the sauce is thinnish and spicy, I think probably has jalapenos in it. They also have a bigger variety of meats available than most places - you can get duck, Czech sausage, or turkey, for instance.
Luling City Market does more of the traditional German meat-market style.
Thelma's that Texana mentioned is from what I understand more of an East Texas style that's got a lot of sauce and is pretty messy.
Williams and Burns are supposed to be pretty good.
Pizzitola's is another one some people like or don't like.
Pappas Barbecue (owned by the Pappas family that does Pappasitos as well as Pappadeaux, Pappamia, Pappas Seafood, and Pappas Steak House) is also really popular for their usual reasons (big portions that are consistent) but I find it to be kind of like roast beef with liquid smoke taste. But again, it's very popular.
County Line is a chain-style that seems to be popular.
Since there are such a variety of styles, you can pick the style you like (or pick several styles) and try them and find what you like. I happen to like mesquite smoked beef but a lot of folks think the smoke flavor is too harsh and prefer oak or pecan smoked, or they like pork, or sauce or no sauce. Or hot East Texas sausages or Czech or German meat market sausages or coarse-ground sausages.

Goode Company is ok,
It is different.....apples pieces in your potato salad... that type of stuff
My 2 favorites are Pizzatola's and William's
Goode Company taqueria is good on the weekends for breakfast ( kirby location)

Thanks for the input guys.
I can't really say That I have one particular style of bbq that I think is the best. I was raised on hickory smoke and pork and chicken as meats, but my Texan wife introduced me to mesquite and brisket, and I now love those flavors as well.
I am very curious about the czech style sausages. I will try some sausage at Goode, but I don't expect it to be the best I'll have down there.
Thanks for the warning about Thelma's! I'll stay far away from the place:)

Welcome to Texas, Smellthatsmoke.
You will find MUCH better sausage in Texas other than what Goode serves. I was not impressed with the sausage, there.
Good luck on selling your house quickly.
STS, what part of Houston will you be moving too?

I think Otto's is over rated too. I never go there for the Que, but they have decent burgers. Speaking of burgers, it's Champ Burger on Sampson St. for me.

I'm not 100% sure where we will end up living, but I do know that it will be on the northwest side of Houston. Jersey Village, Spring, somewhere around that area.
My wife has family around those areas, so I'm sure we will try to be close to them. I don't know the area too well yet, thats all I know so far.

Good area to be in. There are several of us cookers that live up that way. Let us know when you get settled and we can all go to Dustaways house and have a party. I am sure he will not mind at all ....

Funny thing, when my cousin got married last year we had the rehersal dinner at Goode Company, and for the life of me, I cannot remember ANYTHING about the food. Other than the guacamole, which was out of this world. I have heard good stuff about the place, but I find it strange that I cannot remember anything about the Q.

You might have been at the Hamburger & Taqueria across the street from the barbecue place? Because I haven't seen guacamole at the barbecue place before but they definitely have it at the Taqueria.

I go to otto's almost every sat night when the weather is good. the one in the Fountains off 59, but i wont eat the food....it sucks!

First of all, WELCOME TO HOUSTON! You'll find that here there are just as many opinions on BBQ joints as there are cars on Loop 610!:D
Personally, I like Goode Co., Otto's is definitely overrated. In the Spring area, we really don't have an abundance of BBQ joints. Rudy's just opened at I-45 and Louetta (enjoyed the 'Que, just hated the wait in line and it was 3:30 Saturday afternoon), "The County Line" is on Cutten Road just north of FM 1960 (pretty good), not very impressed with "The Rib Tickler" BBQ in Tomball, must have caught them on a bad day. Strack Farms on Louetta Road serves a little of everything, but they do a pretty good job when it comes to BBQ. Keep in mind all of these places are fairly far apart from each other, the Spring/Klein area is spread out, just like suburban sprawl should be!:D Of course these are just my opinions, the Russian and French judges scores were MUCH lower!:D:

Thanks for all the info on some of the area Q places SmokinKat. I will put it to good use:wink:
Just so I'm not looking Like a total goofball...how do you say Goode anyway?
I've heard it both ways....Goodie, Good?
Any places around here serve Pulled Pork? I'm guessing a good Pulled pork sammie is hard to find round here.
I've seen pork on a few of the signs and such as we drove around, but it seems to be sliced loin and such. I've yet to see anything about Pulled pork.
I'm not going to be able to survive without a pulled pork fix every now and then...course if I can't find any, I will just have to fire up the smoker and make it myself. I'll do that anyway, but sometimes I just want to go somewhere and eat...not cook all day.

The e is silent .. just sounds like good company bbq ...
Not a lot of places have pork, I only get it at Lyndons up off 290 NW Houston .... somebody will be along to give you other places shortly ... :)

Ok here's my personal opinion of Goode Company.
Like a few said, It was ok but not great. I really couldn't say anything was bad, but nothing was outstanding either.
I got the brisket, ribs and czech sausage.
I thought the ribs were very good. They could have used a little more rub and just a bit more smoke flavor, but they were perfectly cooked. It came off the bone only where you bit into them.
The Brisket was extremely tender and juicy, but again could have used more rub and smoke flavor.
The sausage was just a sausage. It was nice, but just like a lot of sausages I have had in the past.
I was unimpressed with their sauce. Some may love it, but not my kind of sauce.
The apples in the beans were an odd addition.
So overall I enjoyed everything I had....except the beans... I would go back, but it's not like I can't wait to get back there to eat again.
I guess I'm going to have to get used to the language barrier. I don't understand or speak a lick of spanish, so I had a hard time communicating with the guys serving the meat. Par for the course round here I guess.
On to the next place on my list!:D

Nope, I'm positive I was sitting in Goode, it was for a wedding rehersal dinner, and they made a HUGE dish of guacamole.

We get the brisket sandwich with jalapeno cheese bread at Goode Company. It's not bad for restaurant BBQ.
