Can anyone tell me where the best place might be to buy Choice packers? All I can ever find is Select and I want to try a choice. I read about them all the time, but I have never seen one on the meat counter.

HEB carries them, you will have to ask for them at the meat counter... same way at Sam's.

Thanks, I'll try asking at Sam's next time. I figured what you see is what you get...:o

Winn Dixe, all the time, 2.99 a pound. Albertson's once in a blue moon at 1.99 a pound
Never at Sam's around here.

Sam's in Houston does not carry choice grade briskets..
I look first at..
Super walmart
Super Target
HEB
Kroger's

In that order...good luck, sometimes all you find is choice...other
times there may not be any for weeks...if you find them, stock up the freezer..

My Sam's here in Conroe had them last summer, maybe they ran across the parking lot to our Super Wally World and picked up a couple.

Choice at Costco (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=10254028&whse=BD_823&Ne=4000000&eCat=BD_823%7C9898%7C10061%7C74737&N=4023923&Mo=41&pos=2&No=11&Nr=P_CatalogName:BD_823&cat=74737&Ns=P_Price%7C1%7C%7CP_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BD_823-EC4469-Cat9898&topnav=bdoff)

Well that looks to be the Flats.

Didn't catch the briskets, but thanks for the heads up...will make a trip tomorrow.![/QUOTE]

Bowhnter2, it's the Wal-Mart on Ohio that I'm talking about. I went back after work and all they had wa a couple of selects, so I asked the meat guy behind the door if they had any choice in the 9-12 lb range in the back. He came out with 3 really nice choice briskets. I bought 2. I don't know if this is an anomaly with the choice, but I'm gonna ask from now on. By the way the price was the same as the select I think.

I have found them at Albertsons just mixed in with the others and the same price too!

I've been lucky I guess. Our commissary here at Sheppard only sells choice packers.

WalMart here has choice mixed with select, from time to time. Same price. Always select at Sam's.

Only way I've been able to get them(choice) is by ordering them from my local butcher. Select I get at either Costco, Sam's club, or Wal Mart

I will be cooking my 1st brisket soon... a few stupid Q's....

1st, I do understand choice is better than select.

On the pit, does it alter your cooking times?
Is the choice worth the cost difference?
What seems to be the most popular in comp's?

Choice does seem to be better than select in that you have a better chance of getting a better brisket if it's graded choice. They do have better marbling, but they aren't necessarily any more tender.

Choice briskets do seem to cook a bit faster than select, but you have to keep in mind the context of briskets and how wildly their cooking times can vary.

Choice is worth some cost difference, but I don't know how much. I won't pay a whole heck of a lot more for choice.

As best as I can tell, choice briskets are more popular at competitions. The folks that actually compete can tell you more about that, though.

All they carry is choice grade meat at the Costco in Arlington. Briskets are usually 1.60 every day
