I have used it in the past (mesquite) and went back to the original. I perfer the real thing. But, to answer your quesiton I have seen/bought mesquite at Wal-mart and Home depot. I would think a number of chain groceries would carry it also. I haven't noticed the Hickory, but they should start carrying it I would think.

I'm not following you on the "real thing" comment... we're still talking about
charcoal, right? What's not real about mesquite/hickory versions?

Right. Sorry I wasn't clear enough. I meant I went back to regular charcoal and use either wood chunks or logs depeding on the pit I am using. You can better control the amount of smoke (or even turn the smoke off) when using chunks or logs.

If you're talking about the Kingsford briquettes with mesquite shavings embedded in it, than it's ok but pretty much the same as regular kingsford. Then again, I've only grilled with it and haven't tried it low and slow. I stopped using it several years ago.

Sounds intresting. Have not seen it yet, but I will give it a try when I do.

I've used the mesquite before and did not care for it. It just seemed to burn hotter and faster with very little mesquite character in the food. Like PitBull, I prefer to just add some chips or chunks to the regular charcoal.

I have not tried the Kingsford hickory, but I doubt I will.
