I was asked if I could smoke some tofu. I told them I guess...
Ok, all I've got left at the moment is some TexasBBQRub "wild" should that work on a tofu? Anyone had any experience with these bean critters?

I would consider it as cheese and go with a cold smoke. I know it will withstand the heat, but would keep it lower temp. Rub the hell out of it... maybe even go as far as rubbing it, then stuffing it into some jalapenos.

Thinking I'll try and dry it some then soak it with some Worcestershire and rub well with the "Wild" and smoke it for an hour or so. Figure the young lady would not appreciate peppers or I'd sure do it like that. May even be good to soak a little Dave's in with it but not this time.

Be very careful about soaking it in anything. Firm tofu is like a friggin' sponge. If you have a strongly flavored marinade, it can come through VERY powerfully in the tofu. You might want to ask her what, if anything, she might like for a marinade.
I have no idea how tofu will take smoke. It has a lot of water in it. Whenever I have cooked with firm tofu, I have first drained it by slicing the block into four slices (across the width), placing those slices between some paper towels, and placed a skillet on top for a half hour or hour or so. If you do that, I bet the tofu will take smoke very well.
I don't think cold smoking is a bad idea, but I do not think it is necessary. Tofu can take plenty of heat.

Also, are they vegan? Doesn't Wooster have some remnants of anchovies in it? I know Lee & Perrins has something like that in it. Just wanted to be sure so you don't waste anything.

I ended up using some rub, maple syrup, soy with some teriyaki sauce and lemon juice to marinate. after a while I'm planning to dry again some then rub with some "Wild" and smoke with the briskets for about an hour using mesquite and hickory.

I'm guessing this young lady has some terrific redeeming qualities to even consider smoking tofu, hell even letting that bean snot near your pit.......

The marinade was great but final product is rather hot/spicy. I will add a honey/bbq glaze when I serve it to try and cut the heat a little hopefully she likes it spicy.

You got that right, Papa, and I have the same opinion of soy milk.

The only soy milk that is drinkable, in my opinion, is a product that is Silk Soymilk Light -chocolate flavored. Easy to get used to. I use it when I take my vitamins. The other Original flavor and Vanilla flavor taste like mucous...

Well the family loved the tofu I let them take all the left overs. It tasted like a chunk of goo with TexasbbqRub Wild on it not really bad just not my deal. I'll stick with brisket and chicken.

I like the unsweetened stuff, actually. It tastes like sunflower seeds. We keep it around the house, since my older boy has a milk allergy, and I drink some now and then. The original flavor is far too sweet for me, as is the vanilla. The chocolate is pretty good, but loaded with sugar. We keep it around in the little drink boxes as an occasional treat.

It smelled smokey but to me tasted like Tx Wild and that was about it. A new experience not likely to repeat for myself but if ask...Well if I do I'll try the drain/freeze/thaw and see if that helps. Several said it will help texture a 100%.

It depends on what sort of texture you want. Freezing and thawing firm tofe firms it up even more and makes it tougher. You could even call it spongy. Some people prefer it; some don't. It actually works very well for some applications, like stir frying, but maybe not so good for soups or stews. I guess it really depends on what you prefer.
Just remember that firm tofu has virtually no flavor on its own, but it easily absorbs other flavors. As you found out, it can absorb them very quickly and strongly, so it takes a little care not to overdo it.
Silky tofu is a whole different ball game!

Texlaw,
It sounds like you've become somewhat of an expert on what Papa Tom calls bean snot.

I like the stuff and have been eating it for years. It is an excellent source of lean, no cholesterol protein. Sometimes, I will press some, cube it up, marinate in a little soy sauce and lemon (or lime) juice, and keep it in the fridge for a snack or breakfast. I might throw a few dashes of Tabaso on there, too.
It's also good to throw the stuff in where you might use mushrooms but want something a little milder or, at least, different.

No thanks. It's just a little to different for me.
My Mom tried to convince me of the merits of being a vegeterian. I told her I already was, but most of my vegetables had been processed by a cow, a pig, or some other animal.
I don't think she apprecitated it.

TL, I'll eat tofu if it's there at someone else's home, but I won't go out of my way to order it or buy it and prepare it.
