A coworker of mine has a sugar hackberry tree (Celtis laevigata) that was struck by lightening yesterday, and he has A LOT of wood he needs to get off his hands. I've done a search on this forum for hackberry, and I've seen that it is suitable for smoking, but I'm still a bit leary. I didn't find anything about personal experience.
Has anyone actually smoked with hackberry? If so, what was the flavor like?

i don't know how true it is, but i always heard that a tree that was hit by lighting wasen't good for cooking with.
i'm sure somebody here can set that story straight.

I believe ya can. Check out the link below, this place sells it. A while back there was a post on all types of wood, also someone asked about Mullberry, and was told by several people it's a good wood for smoking.

I cook with pellets, so I'm somewhat limited. I used to have a link that listed the characteristics of different woods, and what meats they worked best on, but I can't find it.
I did find a few sites that showed Hackberry as a smoking wood.
