I'm looking to purchase a remote thermometer. I want one where I can set the temperature. I had one from Oregon Scientific where you set the type of meat but could not set the temperature! A thermometer that includes a probe of the ambient temperature of the smoker would be a plus!
Thanks from a BBQ newbie.....:D

First of all, welcome to the forum. If you go to search and type in remote thermomerter, you will find a lot of previous threads on remotes. Go to the new members section and introduce yourself to the forum.

Howdy Guru, the Maverick ET-73 sounds like what you may be looking for, dual probes, one for meat the other for the temp at the grate level. Adjustable temp alarms for both pit and meat, usually can be found for under 50 dollars.

Welcome guru,ET-73 is a good choice.Two probs,work ok,and fairly
cheap.
If you still have your oregon scientific therm.try holding the meat
button down.meat type will go blank and you can run your temp.
up to whatever you want.

Thanks guys for your responses. I read about every thread on remote thermometers and a bunch of reviews on Amazon on the ET-73. I decided to give it a try.:)

Dang Thanks SD I hope it works for me. I have 4 of them because they work so well other than the dam "You're entre is XXXXXX" going off ad infinitum. The Oregon Scientific have great range and such.

I have two ET-73s, two ET-901bs, two Oregon Scientific receivers, and one transmitter. The other transmitter is the one I left inside the smoker. The Mavericks work great and the Oregon Scientific did too, until the transmitter melted.

I do like my Nu-Temp quite a bit. The only problem I have with it is that it does not have a power switch. Either you have to take the batteries out or you have to change them more often than you would like. I've never used the ET-73, but I've heard such good things about them from cookers I trust (i.e., those around here), that I would not hesitate to get one of them.

Both the ET 73 and the Nu Temp units are good. As Texlaw said, the downside to the Nu Temp is lack of an on off swithc. I have the 701 with 3 units so you can monitor meat temps and/or grate temps at the same time. The 73 works good but you can only monitor 1 meat at a time.

Get your instruction book out and study it. I have a OS, and I can get temps or those "dummy pictures." I use mine only for pit temp--no trouble getting readings from 100 yards away.
