Any way to keep them out? At the rate they are going I won't have anything but sawdust to cook with in a few months:shock:
I was out around it saturday, and they were swarming all over it, more sawdust on the wood than at a sawmill:evil:

You can spray around the perimeter of the wood about once every two weeks, but not on the wood with malathon.

You have unfortunantly stumbled over one of the many drawbacks of an offset bbq pit. You got to put all that wood somewhere whilst the climactic cooking hour arises. The bugs get in it..the rats..lizzards..fire ants etc. I had about 7 rotten cords of wood in my backyard one time. Buy yourself an ECB or one of them high dollar yuppie ECB's with a fancy paint job called a WSM and a bag of chunks..few bags of Ozark Oak if you can find it. Kingsford can be used in a pinch. Haul off the rotten wood so Mama will quit naggin. Now here in Cotown all I got to do is throw if over the fence and the trashman come along and pick it up with a big claw looking gizmo. They say pile it up no mo bigga than a VW bug and they will come get it..and they do. Glad to see my outreagous taxes providing some kind of benefit. They want money each month too..so I take that back. Ya know another possiblity is to cook something using the stuff. Aint no bug I ever seen who can survive the inside of a hot fire box:)

Ants add a special flavor to Chicken.........../
If ya can...Toss the wood far away....& Amdrox the yard
(if ya need to use it....pre burn it & watch them buggers fry!)
Check your source before you buy again....I had to tell mine to Amdrox & spray his wood field (& he did).

You know what you get when you ASSUME? Assuming Tommy has an offset smoker, has nothing to do with bugs in his wood. Insulting a man's cooker is like insulting his wife. Simply sounds like he has bugs in his wood. Let's assume it is for his wood burning fireplace. Guess that is one of the many problems with wood burning fireplaces. Or a wood burning stove. What should he do then?
Tommy, take advantage of the bugs. Use it as an excuse to cook daily. I doubt anyone would be thinking about bugs in the wood when they are sucking on rib bones. :)

I think I'm gonna spray me a new spot to keep it, then move it over. I cut it myself, so can't complain to the cutter. I just don't want em to start eating on my shop! And it is for my offset. I got all this free, just my labor.

Ants make a satisfying POP when they burn, lol.
We have the same propblem in our yard. I have 7 tall oaks down, in some stage of cutting/splitting. We have started using the crystal stuff that the ants take back to the colony, it seems to be working.

My worry with that stuff, is they would carry it into the wood, and it would be there when I cook with it.

I agree, yer BOTH asses!
gatorpit.......why in the world would we "assume" he is using the wood for a fireplace? I'm at a "bbq" forum, not a "fireplace" forum.:D
(just taking up the slack since Redneck is not here at the moment)
Fred.....Tell me more about the good/bad "special flavor to chicken" you are talking about. Do I need to start an ant farm?
****I need a good chicken recipe for this weekend or I might have to wear some kind of stupid looking hat or something in Pasadena.

With that logic someone could argue replacing a fine looking gal with blow up doll.
