Does anyone use rib racks in order to maximize room and to cook more ribs at one time? If so, do they actually do what they are supposed to? It seems like the inner racks wouldn't get as much smoke to them........just curious before I try it:shrug:

Frankly, I have always found them to SUCK!!! If you leave every other space empty, they will function fine. That, however, kind of defeats the purpose! WM

So long as there is air space between the meat you are fine. If the meat is touching each other, you will not get the same flavor. You may have to do some flipping in the rib rack, depending on what kind of pit you are cooking on. But, you probably move the meat around already during the cook. You can get rib racks at a retail store for very little money. Give it a try. if you don't like, trash the rib rack. Academy sells for around 10 bucks.

I bought a rack for my first homemade pit, space was limited with that pit ..
but I was cooking competition style ribs and didn't like using it...
now for backyard, or cooking for the masses, it would probably work ok
Ended up giving it way to somebody that had more uses for it..

You know, I see you have an upright. Paul Kirk swears by hanging his ribs. Have you ever considered tryin that? Woody

I bought 2 racks for use in my Cookshack which I use for small gatherings, I can cook up to 10 racks of baby backs. I do move them around and spray with a bit of apple cider or root beer. Smoke should be an enhancement, not the dominating flavor. Besides, after 22 years as a wildland firefighter, I've tasted enough burning wood, and other stuff. Watch how the average person dumps BBQ sauce and salt on it, they wouldn't know if u smoked it with railroad ties ! I have seen too many choice steaks get drowned in A1 or 57 sauce. Just a thought... It does give a better smoke flavor if I only do 4 - 6 racks and leave space, so I must agree with the others here.
Please, just don't boil them ! thanks...

Thanks for all the replys so far. I'm not worried to much about the cost of the rack. I am more concerned about the 4 racks in the middle that may not come out right. To me, that means there were 2 pigs that died in vain.:roflmaoha0::roflmaoha0:. I do have an upright and with the way I have the pit tuned, I can run both areas within 25 deg of each other. I may give it a try and see what happens. NEVER boil my ribs. And, in my opinion, sauce should only be used as a cover up for messed up ribs. Luckily, I have neber needed sauce...:D

Grantsburg aye? I looked you up on a map, and find that I spent some time up in your area when I was 19. I was in the Center City/ Chisago Lakes region of Minnesota being "rehabilitated". ........it didn't take!!!:roflmaoha0:

Hmmmm.... Doesn't look like MUCH HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS (http://forum.texasbbqrub.com/showthread.php?t=27032)..... :roflmaoha0:
I am tempted to build some myself if I can find decent design. Of course, a bigger pit would solve a lot of my troubles - except for the trouble my wallet would be in. :o

Well think I agree with the prevailing thoughts that rib racks are a piece of sheet. I got one around here somewhere and it do just whut you was affered it would do in the opening post...i.e. the outside racks block of the inners from the heat and smoke. Forces you to have to flip and move em around in the racks not to even mention having to flip them from top to bottom. They are a giant pain in the coola.

Hey Redneck, NEXT FRIDAY. May be the Friday after that or after that or after that.
Now back to topic. Most folks don't use rib racks unless they have too because of the itty bitty pit they have. Understandable. The flip side of that is, there are those that need them to cook a boat load of ribs on what is already a fairly large pit. Need to serve the masses. For example, I can get 30 racks of full spare ribs on this one food tray and more if baby backs: http://www.gatorpit.net/accessories/images/Gator_Pit_Rib_Rack_Holder_4.jpg

Whether anyone likes them or not doesn't matter. Question is: Do you need them.

I use a rib rack due to the itty bitty pit I have. I don't have room in my smoke chamber to do a bunch of ribs so the rack helps out some.
