I bought an expensive maple cutting board several years back. When I received the board it came with mineral oil and beeswax. The instructions said to apply the oil and finish with the bees wax.

Recently I purchased a Boos cutting board. It mentioned nothing about the beeswax.

I was wondering if anyone had enough experience with wooden cutting boards to tell me if the beeswax is beneficial or it the oil alone enough for protection?

TIA

Good question. I bought a Boo's board for my Grand-daughter's wedding present about seven years ago. It was a big counter-top reversable model. I saw it a few months ago and it looked brand new. I asked her about it and she said she really loved it. No mention of oil or bees' wax. She's a cooking and cleaning machine, so I know she must use it. My counter top board must be over 25 years old and all I ever cleaned it with was soap and water. I don't know the make of it or the wood, but I believe I mail ordered it from LL Bean. Got no termites in it to my knowledge. :P

I have serveral larger maple cutting boards and only used mineral oil on them. I've actually never heard of the bees wax part before.

Oil them once a day for a week, once a week for a month, and once a month for life. Never heard of using beeswax.

I'm a woodworker and I make cutting boards. The beeswax is used to make the board water resistant and to add protection against wear. It won't make the board water proof. It isn't absolutely necessary but using it will keep your board looking better longer. It also fills in small knicks and cuts and helps keep food and bacteria from getting down into the board.

I use beewax about once a year, and mineral oil about every other month. I use bee wax on all our solid oak furniture. It's really great stuff!
